While most kids are asking for iPads, new video games and bikes for their birthdays, Jaden Smith is asking parents Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith for emancipation.

The Herald Sun reports:

Jaden is gearing up for his 15th birthday in July and has surprised his father with his choice of gift.

“He says, ‘Dad, I want to be emancipated.’ I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor, because he really wants to have his own place, like ooh,” Will laughed to British newspaper The Sun.

So, what’s the kicker? Mom and Dad seem pretty cool with it. Moviefone reveals:

Will Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, are known for their laid-back approach to parenting. As Smith notes, “That’s the backlash. On the other side, if kids just want to have command of their lives, I understand.”

One would think that this can’t be just an open-and-shut case. Of course there’s something a little deeper. Papa Smith notes, “Your father’s the biggest movie star in the world, and you’re struggling for your little piece of dignity in this extreme shadow.”

According to Philly.com:

Will Smith didn’t divulge whether or not he and Jada would grant Jaden’s wish.

The site also noted that Jaden may be taking cues from dad Will Smith’s song “Parents Just Don’t Understand.”

Presently, the father and son duo are gearing up for the May 31 release of their feature film After Earth.
