Today the star of the stage and screen Hugh Jackman revealed on his Instagram account that he had a mark on his nose checked, only to reveal skin cancer. The mark has since been removed.
Here is what you need to know about this Instagram scare.
1. He Posted a Warning to Fans
On his Instagram, Jackman posted his face with a bandage on his nose where he had just had the cancerous spot removed. With it he posted a warning for his fans to get checked and use sunscreen saying:
Deb said to get the mark on my nose checked. Boy, was she right! I had a basil cell carcinoma. Please don’t be foolish like me. Get yourself checked. And USE sunscreen!!!
2. Basal Cell Carcinoma is the Most Frequent Type Skin Cancer
According to skincancer.org, Basal Cell Carcinoma is very common and occurs when the cells have been exposed to too much Ultra Violet light.
This cancer can manifest itself as marks that look like, “open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars.”
3. X-Men: Day of Future Past Is Releasing Soon
There has been a lot of buzz around Jackman’s newest upcoming blockbuster X-Men: Days of Future Past where he will be reprising his role as Wolverine.
The film is set to release May 23, 2014.
4. 3.5 Million People are Diagnosed with Skin Cancer in the United States Each Year
According to Cancer.org, skin cancer is the most common type of cancer with 3.5 million cases of basal and squamous cell cancer diagnosed each year.
Although doctors have become very effective in treating these cancers, some can still be deadly.
