4. Yellin Owns an Art Gallery Called “The Intercourse”
The Intercourse is an art gallery in Red Hook, Brooklyn, close to where Michelle Williams lives. It was founded by Yellin in 2012 and Wikipedia describes the arts center as this:
The center includes a large scale exhibition space, a garden and sculpture park, an artist-in-residency program, a class and lecture series. The Intercourse opened to the public in June 2012 with Adam Green’s show Cartoon and Complaint … The Intercourse is housed in an Civil War era brick building. The space was originally a part of the complex of Pioneer Iron Works and is a remnant of Red Hook’s booming industrial past.
Yellin is also the founder of Pioneer Works, which is a non-profit institute for art and innovation in Red Hook as well.
5. One of His Most Well-Known Exhibits Was a Tribute to Diane Von Furstenberg
This past winter, Dustin Yellin created a sculptural tribute to iconic fashion designer Diane Von Furstenberg, focusing on her signature “Wrap Dress.” According to Art Observed:
The work was created for the 40th anniversary of the design, and was meant to look like “an apparition—as if it just materialized in a dreamlike state,” Yellin says.
The “wrap dress” was supposed to look like a floating ghost embedded in layered glass. W Magazine describes the exhibit and Yellin’s artistry as this:
Accustomed to working with collages on sheets of glass that he then laminates to produce colorful tableaux as deep and glowing as aquariums, Yellin decided to leave the dress empty. It can stand alone. The wrap dress, after all, has clothed innumerable women for four decades, making it a witness and a participant through a period of dramatic change.
