In The Fault in Our Stars, they warm and break our hearts as Gus and Hazel, high school cancer patients who fall in love.
This is the second time they are sharing the screen, having played siblings in the another YA film Divergent.
Let’s learn about the undeniable bond of this on-screen couple.

The two went from playing brother and sister in Divergent to boyfriend and girlfriend in The Fault in Our Stars.
The actors get asked about this strange coincidence quite often, and they don’t take it seriously.
In an interview with Pop Sugar, Elgort said that Woodley does joke about that harsh reality with him.
However, he doesn’t see anything wrong with former siblings falling in love on screen.
In fact, he said, “It would be a shame if we were only able to do one role together forever, brother and sister.”
Since Shailene was cast before Ansel, Green said, “When they told me he was going to come in and audition, I was like, ‘Ah, that’s not going to work.'”
In the end, it all worked out, as evidenced in the heartwarming sneak peeks we’ve seen in the multiple trailers released.
In an interview with Vulture, Green put an end to all the speculation:
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But actors act. They aren’t really brother and sister. If they were really brother and sister, it might be an issue for me.
2. They Have an ‘Affinity’ for Each Other
Since they had already filmed Divergent, which hit theaters on March 21, they had a connection before they had to start shooting scenes for TFIOS.
Ansel and I have an affinity for each other just as far as recognizing and admiring the spirits in one another. It was nice to do a movie like Fault, which does have so many vulnerable scenes with somebody I was already comfortable with.
Elgort returned the sentiment, saying in the film’s behind-the-scenes footage:
I’m glad that it was Shailene that got to be my Hazel Grace.
This bond was especially important since their characters of Gus and Hazel must face the subjects of teen cancer and young love.
When Woodley cried during the premiere of the movie at the Hollywood Regal Theater in Atlanta, Georgia, Elgort was there to comfort her.

3. They Like to Hug
They are not shy when it comes to PDA, and the red carpet is no exception.
In the video above, while Elgort was being interviewed during a Divergent premiere, he stopped answering questions to run over and hug Shai.
The warm embrace lasted for quite some time, and Shai even put her hands on her costar’s neck to keep him close.
When he got back to the interviewer, he explained:
I haven’t seen Shailene since I wrapped The Fault in Our Stars … only four months, but it feels like years.
4. They Befriend Their Co-stars
Elgort and his Fault co-star, Nat Wolff, have become close friends.
The above post, taken from Elgort’s Instagram account, had this caption:
My BFF @natandalex came to the NY #divergent premier to b with me :) missed him so much!
Wolff plays Isaac, a blind cancer survivor, and Gus’ best friend in the movie.
In 2012, Shailene played George Clooney’s sarcastic teenage daughter in Alexander Payne’s The Descendants, earning her an Independent Spirit Award.
In Interview magazine, she said that both men have become a part of her life:
…both George and Alexander have become like big brothers or wise friends. They’ve given me advice not only on the industry, but also on my personal life.
5. They Both Have a Connection to New York

Elgort is a born and bred New Yorker, having grown up on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. He attended a prestigious arts high school there, La Guardia, known for famous alumnae like Jennifer Aniston and Sarah Michelle Gellar.
All of his family members work as artists in the city.
The young actor told Complex about his love for the city:
…it’s really nice coming from New York where there’s so many people and so many different experiences that you can have. It’s important to surround yourself with that, especially as an actor.
Woodley, a California native, had a different experience in Gotham.
At 18, she came to the city with her boyfriend at the time.
She admits that it was a hard time in her life as she tried to rediscover herself:
I packed up with my boyfriend at the time and we showed up with our suitcases and got an apartment. I got a job at a local clothing store. I had just turned 18, and we moved to New York a few day s after my birthday. I would definitely say that it was a darker part of my life, when I was just trying to figure out who I was and what I wanted. And then being in my first big relationship and having that end … I remember staying in a lot during that time. It was a lot of figuring life out and having my amazing adolescent revelations.
