Shay Mitchell is back as Emily as Pretty Little Liars enters its fifth season on the air.
When the 27-year-old isn’t filming, she makes time for a lifestyle blog, a boyfriend, and socializing with fans.
Here’s what you need to know about one of the “Pretty Little Liars.”
1. She Plays a Lesbian on ‘PLL’
Although she is straight in real life, Mitchell has no problem playing a lesbian who dates lots of pretty liars.
In an interview with Bethenny Frankel she said:
Sometimes I’d rather kiss another girl than I would some random guy I don’t know. They smell pretty, they have cute lip balm on.
She has said, “Emily has dated some beautiful girls.”
In the video above, we watch as Emily reunites with Alison.
The actress has found similarities between herself and her on-screen persona.
“We both may seem shy until you get to know us. We’re both loyal—people trust Emily most to keep a secret—and we’re both always there to listen,” she told Out Magazine.
2. Her BF is a Friend of Drake
Ryan Silverstein grew up with Drake in Toronto.
In fact, he was even in Drake’s video for “Started from the Bottom.”
In the fall of 2013, Mitchell and Silverstein started posting about each other on their Instagram pages.

3. She Lets ‘PLL’ Fans Play With Her
In the above video, we see the cast in a photo shoot for GQ.
The actress has a live-tweet hashtag, #PLLayWithShay, where fans can socialize with her.
“It was something that I wanted to do to interact with fans and get their opinions of the episodes and storylines,” she told Adweek.

4. She Writes a Blog
She started the lifestyle blog, shaymitchblog.tumblr.com with her roommate Michaela Blaney. They focus on cooking, DIY projects and home décor.
It’s my friend and I making dinner and sharing the recipe with people – or my outfit of the day and where to buy it. I wouldn’t say I am a domestic goddess but I’m trying – sometimes you have to burn a batch of cookies to learn what to do differently next time. We are currently re-designing the whole look and relaunching it – we are really looking forward to that.
5. She’s Half Filipino
She told Esquire about the fact that some Filipino girls try to whiten their skin.
“They’re very insecure about their skin, about it not being lighter. I’m sorry—you come out anywhere else and everyone is tanning! I’m outside in my pool tanning every single day. This is the color we were born with,” she said.
Love it. And be proud of it. If not a lot of people are saying it and they think I’m crazy then so be it, but I’m sorry, I’m booking jobs out here because I’m celebrating who I am and who my mom is.
