The cast of Guardians of the Galaxy visited Jimmy Kimmel last night.
Amongst the group was Dave Bautista, an ex pro wrestler who recently made a foray into acting.
As Drax in the Marvel film based on the comic book, this is his biggest movie role to date.
As we await the film’s opening on August 1, we compiled these highlights from the 45-year-old’s career and personal life.
1. He Started Acting in 2012
— Dave Bautista (@DaveBautista) July 20, 2014
In the highly anticipated blockbuster, he plays Drax the Destroyer, a green warrior with the power to fly.
His acting career started with a role in Quentin Tarantino’s The Man With the Iron Fists, shown below.
Although he is used to being in the spotlight from years of wrestling, he says making movies is different.
It’s funny; when I go to do movies and stuff — and I haven’t done all that many — they think that I have tons of experience at being in front of a camera because of all my years in professional wrestling. But they’re so different, you really can’t even compare it.
2. He’s the Longest Reigning Heavyweight Champion in WWE History
He made his WWE debut on the May 9, 2002 edition of SmackDown!
Batista, as his last name is shortened to in wrestling, who got the nickname “the Animal,” began wrestling at 30 years old, which is considered extremely late in the sport.
That delayed start didn’t seem to stand in the way of his career, as he went on to be a six-time heavyweight champion.
This honor came after he won the World Heavyweight Championship four times and the WWE Championship twice.
In an interview with Wrestling 101 he explained how he got involved:
I was living in Minneapolis at the time and WCW were holding open tryouts, so I actually just went to tryout at their Power Plant but I actually failed miserably and they kicked me out and told me never to come back. However I had got a buzz from it and had decided I wanted to pursue it.

3. He Won His First MMA Fight
In October of 2012, he won the first MMA fight he ever participated in.
During the match, shown above, Bautista persevered against his opponent Vince Lucero.
According to Sherdog.com, the end of the match
took an interesting turn:
Bautista created some space and brought the 300-pound Lucero to the ground. Bautista worked for a rear-naked choke but couldn’t get the submission and instead settled for a steady stream of punches from back-mount. With Lucero unable to escape and offering nothing in return, referee Dan Miragliotta stepped in to call a halt to the bout at 4:05 of the opening round.
4. He Had 2 Grandchildren By the Time He Was 40
— Horror movies rule! (@BatistaBombTime) July 13, 2014
He married his first wife, Glenda and they had two children. Keilana was born in 1990, and Athena was born in 1992.
Keilana went on to have two children, Jacob and Aiden. Therefore, Dave and Glenda became grandparents at an early age.
His marriage to Glenda ended in divorce as well as his marriage to Angie, which lasted from 1998 to 2006.
During his time in the WWE, he was linked to WWE Divas Kelly Kelly, Rosa Mendes and Melina Perez.
5. He Wrote a Book
He penned Batista Unleashed in 2007.
One reviewer described the book as “Rocky meets WWE.”
In the memoir, he discusses growing up poor, and having had three murders take place in his front yard.
