Masters of Sex debuts its second sex-filled season on July 13.
Meet the man who plays real-life sex researcher, William Johnson, Michael Sheen.
The 45-year-old has a diverse film catalog and dating history.
Here’s what you need to know about the Welsh actor.
1. He’s Never Had a Conventional Sex Scene
In Season 2, viewers should expect Masters and his assistant, Virginia Johnson to consummate their union.
The actor thinks the show’s sexual material is very relevant, even though it’s set in the 1950’s.
In an interview with Slate, he said:
It’s about a subject that is endlessly fascinating, that we will always be drawn to, because we’re dealing with it all the time. It doesn’t matter whether this is set in the ’50s or not, it’s exactly what we’re dealing with in our homes and in our minds and in our bedrooms every day.
In an interview during the Television Association’s Press Tour, he describes his knack for getting hired to film unconventional sex scenes:
As an actor, I’ve never done a conventional sex scene in my life; it’s always f*ck*d up…whether I’ve got chocolate powder all over my face or I’m barking when I come or I’m hanging off a cliff. The first sex scene I ever did was with Stephen Fry in a film about Oscar Wilde where I rode him like a bucking bronco. So I don’t really know what a conventional sex scene is like, to be honest.
2. He’s Dating Sarah Silverman
He was first linked to the comedienne- and Jimmy Kimmel’s ex- back in February.
Us Weekly reported that a witness said, “They were making out at Soho House. They were all over each other for a lot of the night.”
At the Critics Choice Awards, Sheen told E News:
She’s great. She’s a wonderful, wonderful person. She’s funny, obviously, but she’s so smart and so sensitive and thoughtful and kind.
The couple will actually be working together on Season 2 of Masters of Sex.
Silverman won a recurring role as Helen, the former lover of Betty.
3. He Has a Daughter With Kate Beckinsale
He met Beckinsale while performing in the touring play, The Seagull. They pair never married, even after having a daughter, Lily, together in 1999.
Beckinsale talked to the Daily Mail about the reason why Sheen never popped the question:
Everyone keeps asking me all the time, including my mother. So, I said to Michael, ‘Why aren’t we married?’ And he said because every single time he was going to ask me, I did something annoying. Maybe if I can stop being annoying for a while he’ll propose.
The pair costarred in Underworld together, and when Beckinsale left Sheen in 2003, she began dating the movie’s director, Len Wiseman.
Of course, there was speculation that she had cheated on Sheen while they were still together. To dispel those rumors, the actress told EW:
The popular notion of how Michael and I broke up — that we were on [the first Underworld] and I ran off with the director [Wiseman] — is just not true. If that were the case, I think it would be very difficult and peculiar to have an okay situation. But everybody involved has felt that the priority is Lily and wanting to get to a good place for her. And everyone is nice. So it’s not bad.
4. He Had a Crazy Laugh in ‘Twilight’
He played the vampire leader, Arlo, since New Moon, the second movie in the franchise.
In the clip above, we see him with R-Patz and K-Stew in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2.
In the infamous scene, when Arlo meets Edward and Bella’s daughter, Renesmee, he lets out a crazily eerie laugh.
When Vulture asked him about it, he replied:
If you’ve lived for hundreds, thousands of years, the boredom just must be horrendous, so when something new comes along, the delight and surprise of it would be quite shocking. So when he meets this child and he says, ‘I hear her strange heart beating’ — I thought it was such a great line as well — I loved the idea that at that moment, something completely shocking happens and it just reminds you that this character is a psychopathic killer.
5. He’s a Proud Welshman

He grew up in the town of Port Talbot, which doesn’t have such a great reputation.
He told The Arts Desk, “I always loved Port Talbot even though everyone else hated it and said, “I can’t wait to get out.” I suppose I always assumed that I would leave anyway so I never had a problem with it.”
There are some actors who claim to be Welsh, but are not.
I identify myself as a Welshman; I’m from Wales. I know Matthew, I know Ioan, I know Rhys Ifans. Damian Lewis claims he’s Welsh; he’s not. Christian Bale claims he’s Welsh; he’s not. There’s definitely a kind of solidarity between the Welsh actors out here.
