Billy Crystal and Robin Williams have been friends for over 20 years, so it’s only fitting that Crystal carry out the tribute to Williams at the 2014 Emmy Awards. Read on for the facts on Crystal and Williams’ friendship, comedy routines, and projects together over the years.
1. Crystal’s Tribute to Williams at the Emmys Will Be Based on Humor
Though Billy Crystal must be torn apart by the suicide of friend Robin Williams, The Liberty Voice states that Crystal’s Emmys tribute to Williams will honor humor rather than sadness. The Liberty Voice reports:
While it is no doubt a difficult task to put the right words together for a grieving public, there is also no doubt that Billy Crystal will ultimately find the right words to say. Billy Crystal’s tribute to Robin Williams at the 66th Emmys will honor the humor, laughter and fun brought to the world by the Patch Adams star as only another accomplished comedian can.
Sara Bareilles is the musical accompaniment for the tribute.
2. When Crystal Was on Inside The Actor’s Studio, He Revealed His Envy of Williams
Billy Crystal appeared on Inside The Actor’s Studio with host James Lipton and when Lipton asked him who he envied in life, Crystal said he envied Robin Williams. He said, “If I were fast, he’d be faster.” When Williams appeared on the show, Lipton shared the anecdote to Williams and he smiled.
On an interesting note, when Lipton asked Williams the classic question of what he’d like to hear God say when he arrives at the pearly gates, Williams said, “They’re seating you in the front.” Williams also said what he’d really want is:
Just to know there’s laughter in heaven, to hear God say, ‘Two Jews walk into a bar.’
