5. She Opted For College Instead of Acting
— Annabeth Gish (@annabethgish) April 16, 2012
When she was 17 years old and was acting in the movie Mystic Pizza, Gish sat down with Roger Ebert for an interview and told her all about her plans to ditch acting for a little while to attend college.
My parents called me their wise little baby. I was mature when I was 4 or 5. My brother and sister were older, so I was raised by four adults. I don’t know if any of us were prepared for some of the things we had to face in the movie business. We’ve learned as we went along. We’re trying to create a balance between the two worlds. For example, I decided not to move out to Los Angeles and plunge into the business and totally give up my education. I’m going to Northwestern next fall. I am going to prove that you can be in Iowa and not be in L.A. and not be in New York and still be a movie actress.
Gish ended up attending Duke University, where she became a Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority girl. At college, she focused on the drama program, film studies and women’s studies and received a B.A. in English in July 1993.
