Miss Ohio Mackenzie Bart has an act unlike any other in the talent category. Read on for all the details on what makes Miss America contestant Bart so special.
1. Bart’s Puppet Is Named Roxy
Mackenzie Bart is a ventriloquist whose puppet’s name is Roxy. Inspired by puppets growing up, Bart decided to become hands-on with her passion. She stated:
I was obsessed with Lamb Chop and I loved Shari Lewis. I used to sit with an old sock and I would mimic what they were doing. I just loved it.
Bart and Roxy do some comedy and sing together and even take their act on the road with the Camping for a Cause organization.
2. With the Help of her Puppet, Bart Won the Preliminary Competition
In an event filled with dancing and singing, Bart’s talent definitely stands out to viewers. Bart and puppet Roxy, sang “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from “Mary Poppins” and took the win.
3. Her Sister Suffers From Smith Lemil Opitz Syndrome
Bart’s platform is to promote universal newborn screenings and it’s a very personal subject for her. This cause is extremely important to her because her younger sister Meme suffers from Smith Lemil Opitz Syndrome, which means that her body does not produce cholesterol. Her sister is now 15 years old, but unfortunately has the size and mental age of an eight year old, according to the Press of Atlantic City.
The condition was apparently unknown for quite some time, so she wasn’t receiving the proper care she needed. Meme also has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
4. Al Roker Should Watch His Back
The weather is a big interest of Bart’s, influenced by her grandmother who taught Bart that you ” do not change The Weather Channel at grandma’s house.” Bart is a student at Ohio State University and is the first person in her family to go to college, where she studies atmospheric sciences. If Al Roker ever retires, Bart hopes to get his job.
5. Miss Ohio Is Not From Ohio
Sometimes contestants aren’t originally from the state they compete in. Bart is actually from Brockway, Pennsylvania. She transferred to Ohio State University from Capital University after her first year and now resides in Columbus. Bart actually competed in the Miss Ohio pageant last year and made the top 10, but this year she took the crown.
