2. YouTube Helped Find The Weeknd Fame
In late 2010, Tesfaye anonymously uploaded several songs to YouTube under the name “The Weeknd” and the rest is history. He released three nine-track mixtapes throughout 2011: “House of Balloons,”” Thursday,” and “Echoes of Silence,” which were all critically acclaimed. In 2012, The Weeknd released a compilation album, “Trilogy,” with remastered versions of his mixtape material and three additional songs. He’s gone from an underground artist to well-known. Just recently, Nick Jonas said The Weeknd was one of his inspirations in music.
3. He Was Raised by his Grandmother
Tesfaye’s father was never in the picture when he was growing up, and his mother was constantly working, so his grandmother took care of him, basically raising him. Because of this, Abel speaks fluent Amharic and it was the first language he learned.
4. His Stage Name Comes From When He Ran Away From Home
Tesfaye says he adopted the stage name, “The Weeknd,” after he dropped out of high school at the age of 17 and “left one weekend and never came home.” The spelling of his stage name has been modified to avoid copyright issues with a Canadian band already named “The Weekend”.
5. The Weeknd Is Currently on Tour with Schoolboy Q & Jhene Aiko
On Friday, September19, 2014, The Weeknd kicked off a tour with music artists Schoolboy Q and Jhene Aiko. Brooklyn Vegan writes:
At Brooklyn’ Barclays Center on Friday, the once rather enigmatic artist proved that he’s no longer an underground gem but a mainstream favorite. After delivering a rapturous and at times chill-inducing performance, Abel Tesfaye left the thousands who attended the first show of his “King of the Fall” tour eager for more.
The Weeknd performs his own music while also featuring some cover songs on his tour.
