Kate Walsh, ‘Bad Judge’: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

The NBC comedy Bad Judge premieres its pilot on October 2.

TV veteran Kate Walsh, who is known for playing Addison Montgomery in Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice, landed the lead role of Rebecca Wright.

Backstage describes its opening scene as showing a “hung-over Wright comatose on her bed, butt and sparkly panties in the air.”

Watch a sneak peek of her in action in the preview above.

Here’s what you need to know about the 46-year-old actress.

1. She Was McDreamy’s Ex

She got cast in her breakthrough role in Grey’s Anatomy at 37. She was supposed to be on for only five episodes, but ended up staying for 59.

On the drama, she played Addison Montgomery, the ex-wife of Patrick Dempsey’s character, Derek Shepherd. Watch some classic scenes in the clip above.

When she left that show, she was given a spinoff, Private Practice, where she resumed her role as Addison, a surgeon.

Private Practice ended in 2013, and she told Arizona Foothills Magazine that it was time to start over.

“When you’re on an hour-long show that you work on nine months out of the year, it’s difficult to do other creative things. As an actor and an artist, I think it’s natural to want to play different parts. So as awesome and amazing as it’s been, I feel like it’s time to move on to my other projects,” she said.

She told Redbook what it was like to play Addison, “I like that she’s flawed and arrogant and really good at what she does. And no matter what happens, she picks herself up and moves on. She keeps trying.

2. She Got Divorced

She was married to movie executive Alex Young for just 15 months. They tied the knot after seven months of dating.

At the time of her divorce, she told Redbook,

“I don’t think anyone gets married thinking that they will get divorced,” she tells me via e-mail a week after we meet. “We certainly did not. Alex and I still care for each other, and I wish him nothing but the best. The silver lining to this, however, is that I have a wonderful family and a great group of friends who really showed their support and encouragement, and for that I am truly grateful.”

3. Her Behavior is Outrageous on ‘Bad Judge’

Time Magazine put it best when they said, “Walsh, at least, is having a blast where she can, burping and drugging and sending a courtroom full of paparazzi to lock-up.”

The Hollywood Reporter describes
her character, Rebecca Wright, as “hard-partying judge who upholds the rules by day and breaks them at night.”

IGN watched the pilot and commented on her work:

That said, the selling point here is Walsh herself, who gets into the role with aplomb. Between terrible dance moves, off-key singing and the physical comedy of it all she seems game for everything, and actually sells this character who makes no apologies for being exactly who she is – cake and wine for breakfast or not.

4. She’s Played Lesbians

In 2003’s Under the Tuscan Sun, she starred as her Grey’s costar, Sandra Oh’s, girlfriend. Watch their scene with Diane Lane, above.

Walsh has played a lesbian three times and commented to Women’s Health:

That’s the fun thing about being an actress: You get to do things you wouldn’t normally do — like be a lesbian. It was funny, that part came in the middle of a trilogy of lesbian roles for me. I had just played a closeted lesbian suburban wife in an indie movie, and then I played a lesbian detective on Karen Sisco. Do I give off a girl-on-girl vibe, I wonder? Or is it because I’m tall? I guess the chicks just dig me!

5. She Feels Like a ‘Loser’ for Not Having Kids

In 2011, when she was 43, she told More magazine, “I feel like a loser [for not having kids]. I would definitely love to be a parent. But I definitely don’t think I want to do it on my own.”

She added, “I thought I’d be married and have three or four kids. I always knew I wanted to be an actress, but I think I always wanted a quote-unquote normal life.”
