Charlie Hunnam plays the role of Jax Teller, the main character on Sons of Anarchy. Hunnam literally stumbled upon acting at age 17 by a production manager when he was drunk in a shoe shop on Christmas Eve. This led to his first role on a children’s show called Byker Grove. Now he plays Jackson “Jax” Teller, one of the most bad-ass characters on television. Jax is President of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club’s Redwood Original (SAMCRO) chapter based in Charming, California, which automatically makes him the National President. His tattoos are all emblematic of the love and loyalty he has to his family and the club. The club’s logo is on his back, there’s tribute tattoo to his father John Teller on his right arm, his son Abel’s name is on his chest, and his second son, also the name of his deceased brother, Thomas, is written on his left arm. Jax lives with a genetic heart disorder that runs in his family and that his mother Gemma also has. Read on for more facts on Jax, why fans love to watch his every move, and what we can expect from him in the show’s final season.
1. Jax’s Mother Killed His Wife and Fans Are Waiting for the Day He Finds Out
Gemma killed Jax’s wife Tara Knowles because she thought Tara was going to snitch on the motorcycle club and she wanted to protect her family. This was not the case and Gemma has been hiding the secret that she killed her son’s wife ever since. Jax feels like his mother is one of the only people he truly trusts and viewers are waiting for the day when a very violent Jax finds out the truth. The SOA wikia describes the gruesome killing of Tara in vivid detail writing:
Gemma hits her with an iron but doesn’t knock her out. Tara struggles against Gemma’s beating and her head is badly smashed on the sink, where Gemma then attempts to drown her. Tara struggles for several seconds before Gemma grabs a barbecue fork and stabs Tara multiple times in the back of the head and her neck. Blood gushing out of the back of her head, Tara collapses and dies. Lt. Roosevelt walks in on the scene and discovers Gemma sitting on the floor next to Tara’s body, in obvious shock. Gemma is mumbling incoherently about how it had to be done because she was going to rat out the MC. Roosevelt tells her she didn’t rat out the MC, and that Jax is giving himself up to protect her.
Gemma struggles every day, living in fear of what might happen to her when Jax finds out what she did and trying to frame others like the Chinese Lin Triad gang for the murder. Tara was Jax’s high school sweetheart and the love of his life.
2. His Sons Are Being Raised by his First Wife, a Recovering Drug Addict
Before marrying his late wife Tara, Jax married Wendy Case, who he later divorced because of her drug addiction. When Wendy cleaned up her act, they got back together and had a son named Abel. Unfortunately, while she was pregnant, Jax felt overwhelmed and left her on in their home as he moved into the clubhouse. Wendy became depressed and started doing drugs again, only to overdose and have their son Abel addicted to crank when he was born 10 weeks premature. Abel was also born with a heart defect and a hole in his stomach. When Jax’s mother Gemma found out about this, she tried to get Wendy to commit suicide.
Wife Tara Knowles mothered Jax’s second son, Thomas, who was named after Jax’s brother who passed away and was also raising Abel as his mother because of Wendy’s drug addiction. After Tara’s death, Wendy wanted to help take care of both boys.
3. Opie, His Best Friend Since Childhood, Gave Up His Life for Jax
Harry “Opie” Winston was the childhood friend of Jax, who was beaten to death in season 5. Opie is son to SAMCRO co-founder Piney and he was married to his wife Donna who wasn’t a fan of him being in the club. When character Tig was assigned by Jax’s step-father Clay to kill Opie, he accidentally killed Opie’s wife. Eventually, Tig comes clean about what happened and Opie moves on with a porn star named Lyla. In season 4, Opie finds his father dead and is told that Clay is the murderer. He attempts to kill Clay, but Jax stops him. In season 5, when Jax, Tig, and Chibs are being arrested for murder, Opie starts a fight so that he can go to jail with them. Gangster Pope tells Jax he must assign one of his men to fight to the death in prison. Tig volunteers, but Pope denies him. As Jax volunteers, Opie steps in and insists on fighting, ultimately dying with a pipe as the weapon.
4. Jax Killed His Step-Father Clay
Clay was Jax’s step-father and he betrayed the club. In season 5, it’s discovered that Clay was working with the gang the Nomads against the club. Finally, the club kicks Clay out, but the only reason they didn’t kill him was because character Bobby voted “no.” Eventually in season 6, Jax, with the help of Tig and Chibs, kills Clay. The SOA wikia writes:
Jax explains that the Club took a vote on how to handle the situation. Clay realizes he is next and, resigned to his fate, stands ready. Jax then shoots Clay in the neck and numerous times in the chest. They then stage the killings to look like Clay and the Irish killed each other in a dispute, which Connor backs up.
Clay was always bad news.
5. His Decisions In the Final Season Are Disastrous
Executive producer Paris Barclay recently sat down with Yahoo for an interview and said that Jax and the rest of the club are continuing to spiral down at a quickening pace, leading up to the series finale. Barclay reveals:
It’s been pretty much a bad season of spiraling anyway, but now the spiral accelerates. Now we’re getting to the part where the circle becomes tighter. When you’re going down the tornado and you really start spinning, everything that everyone knows and finds out starts impacting everyone else and the decisions they make. As you see by the end of the episode, some of the decisions Jax [Charlie Hunnam] makes end up being disastrous.
