Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are back just where we left them in 1994’s Dumb and Dumber.
Although 20 years has passed since we saw the dynamic duo of Lloyd and Harry, they remain just as simple-minded as ever.
As Dumb and Dumber To comes to theaters on November 14, celebrate the one-of-a-kind relationship between the lovable actors that gets better with age.
1. They Haven’t Worked Together in 20 Years
“It took two minutes, and they were back to exactly what we saw 20 years ago,” co-director/ writer Bobby Farrelly told the Daily News.
Daniels thought the sequel was even funnier than the original because of the duo’s existing bond, and told mlive:
I loved doing it. I loved working with Jim again. I think we’re even better together this time than before. We know each other, we’re friends, we work with each other. We’re 20 years better at what we’re doing than what we were. I like our chances. It certainly felt funnier than the first one, I know that. But it’s not for me to judge.
2. Carrey Wanted a Sequel
Five years ago, Carrey called co-director/ writer Peter Farrelly after seeing the movie in his hotel room after 15 years.
“We’ve got to do another,” Carrey told the director.
Peter told the NY Daily News, ” “He said, ‘There’s so much love in that movie. I want to do that again.’”
“I did call them at some point and say, ‘First of all, we have got to work together period.’ As you get older, you value these things. I want to be with a gang again. I want to hang out with him and the Farrellys. It is just really about that. It is about having fun,” Carrey explained at the film’s L.A. press conference.
3. They Get Into Character Differently
At the L.A. press conference, Carrey explained:
Lloyd is a part of me now, so it is kind of strange. I whack the tooth out. You really have to totally get into the politics of the character and everything. There are a couple of things with Lloyd. You whack the tooth out, and you think really selfishly. You just go, ‘Mine, Mine, Mine,’ in your mind.
Daniels, on the other hand, swishes his head around in order to transform into Harry. In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, shown above, Carrey said,
“He does that before every take, by the way,” Carrey confirmed.
4. Their Original Salaries Were Very Different
According to Business Insider, for Dumb and Dumber, Daniels was paid $50,000 and Carrey got a $7 million-dollar paycheck.
In fact, Daniels’ agents did not want him to make the original. “We’re going to stop this. You’re not going to do this movie and we’re going to keep you on the Oscar trail,” the actor recalled to the Daily Times of a phone call he got at the time.
5. Lloyd & Harry Didn’t Get Any Wiser
“There was never any effort to make us anything… We were middle aged and we hadn’t grown intellectually a day,” Daniels said in the Today Show interview above.
