MTV EMAs 2014: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

This year is the 20th anniversary of the MTV EMAs, taking place at The SSE Hydro Arena in Glasgow, Scotland and the show is hosted by Nicki Minaj. The MTV Europe Music Awards was originally called the European Awards and was established in 1994 by MTV Networks Europe. In the beginning, it was an alternative to the American MTV Video Music Awards, but today it has become its own entity. Next year, the awards will take place in Germany on November 8, 2015. Last year’s show was in Amsterdam and Miley Cyrus lit up a marijuana joint onstage, so you never know what could happen this time. Read on for all the facts on the awards show that’s taking over MTV on Sunday, November 9, 2014.

1. A Live Stream of the Show Will Be Available Online

If you are unable to watch the big event on TV, you can check out all the information on the live stream sites, set to air the show online. You can find all the details on how to watch the EMAs online in the above link.

2. Calvin Harris Has Canceled His Performance

The awards show will air in the U.S. at 7:00 p.m. on MTV and will feature performances from some of the biggest names in music. U2 have just been announced as performers in addition to Enrique Iglesias, Calvin Harris, Charli XCX, Kiesza, Royal Blood, Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran and Nicki Minaj. Unfortunately, Calvin Harris has taken ill and had to cancel his performance. It’s also been announced that performances by Fifth Harmony and Nick Jonas will air as well. MTV dishes on U2’s performance writing:

This will be the fourth time U2 have been part of the MTV EMA—they performed ‘Pop Muzik / Mofo’ in Rotterdam in 1997, ‘Beautiful Day’ in Stockholm in 2000, and and ‘One / Magnificent’ and ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ with Jay Z from Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate in 2009.

Alicia Keys has also been added to the line-up. MTV also reports:

The EMA will air on MTV channels worldwide, and the U.S. telecast will kick off live from Miami at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT with Nick Cannon and Molly Tarlov and a “Jealous” performance from Nick Jonas.

3. Ozzy Osbourne Is Receiving the Global Icon Award

Ozzy Osbourne will be the recipient of the 2014 Global Icon Award at the show and will perform in celebration. Last year, Eminem was the recipient of the award. Additional recipients of the award are Bon Jovi in 2010, Queen in 2011 and Whitney Houston in 2012. Osbourne will be the fifth recipient. Some other big Osbourne news is that their family reality show is returning after 13 years and it was Ozzy’s idea. The show will start shooting in January. We can’t wait for that!

4. There Are a Ton of A-List Presenters

Afrojack, supermodel Jourdan Dunn, WWE divas Brie and Nikki Bella (a.k.a. the Bella Twins) and David ‘The Hoff’ Hasselhoff are some of the presenters at the show. Redfoo and Slash are included in the list of presenters at the awards. This past Friday, Slash helped perform in a pre-show event to promote the EMAs 2014.
