‘The Mentalist’ Season 7 Premiere Spoilers: The Final Season

Tonight, The Mentalist premieres its 7th and final season at 9:30 p.m. on CBS. In honor of its final season, we’ve gathered all the spoilers we could find. USA Today describes what to look out for in the beginning of the last season:

This long-running procedural kicks off its seventh and final season tonight with an outing that finds Jane and Lisbon heading up the hunt for the murderer of an undercover agent. But don’t focus on the case — the show certainly doesn’t. What matters tonight is the budding romantic relationship between the two main characters (so charismatically played by Simon Baker and Robin Tunney), from their largely unsuccessful efforts to keep it a secret to the often amusing ways love affects their usual work routine.

Show creator Bruno Heller calls this final season both a “final statement” and an “encore,” meaning that viewers will get to see what they love, and will be satisfied with an ending. Heller stated that:

Essentially this season is about what happens when life turns out the way you had hoped it would. What happens when you do have a happy ending, what happens after that? Jane and Lisbon have been engaged in this epic journey for six years, trying to capture Red John … and now that they’ve done that, how do you live again after that? … Leading on from the end of Season 6, how do you create a different relationship out of the relationship that was born in the kind of trauma that theirs was, so it is that story. It is also in a larger sense — it is an encore. It is a last hurrah for the show, and we wanted to give the fans as strong a season of The Mentalist as we could.

The premiere episode of the season is called “Nothing But Blue Skies” and the synopsis reads:

Lisbon and Jane decide to conceal their relationship from their colleagues as they investigate an undercover agent’s murder; an ambitious agent joins the team.

The second episode is called “The Greybar Hotel” and the synopsis reads:

In hope of persuading a convict to turn on her boyfriend — the leader of a high-end car theft ring — Lisbon goes under cover as an inmate.

Robin Tunney opens up about her romance on the show this season and stated to TV Guide: Season 7 is not 50 Shades of Grey done by The Mentalist. It’s sort of interesting because they’re two people who don’t know how to be in a relationship. They’ve both been alone for such a long time. It’s exploring how two people who are adults, who’ve only been responsible for themselves and haven’t really shared their life with anybody in a long time, feel [as they] explore that intimacy. That it’s uncomfortable.

TV Guide writes about a couple issues that arise in the final season of the show:

Things get awkward around the office as Lisbon and Jane initially try to keep their relationship hidden from their colleagues. But that’s only the start of their troubles … One colleague who knows all too well what’s going on between Lisbon and Jane is Lisbon’s ex, Pike (Pedro Pascal). And he has an exchange with Jane in the season premiere that may present some challenges for the new couple.

In addition to Pike’s character, there will reportedly be more blasts from the past that return and cause problems as well. One returning character is murderous matchmaker Erica Flynn. As far as Rigsby and Van Pelt, it’s undetermined if they’ll be back or not. TV Guide also gives details on the character Abbott, writing:

FBI Agent Dennis Abbott’s (Rockmond Dunbar) past will come back to haunt him in a major way over a three-episode arc that also features guest stars Dylan Baker as a DEA agent “who knows a bit too much about Abbott’s past” and Christine Adams as Abbott’s wife.

As far as the final episodes, the third will be titled “Orange Blossom Ice Cream”, the fourth is called “A Hint of Yellow”, the fifth episode is titled “Silver Briefcase”, the sixth is “Green Light”, the seventh is “Little Yellow House”, the eighth is titled “The Whites of His Eyes”, the ninth is called “Copper Bullet”, the tenth episode is called “Nothing Gold Can Stay”, the eleventh is titled “Byzantium”, and the twelfth is “Brown Shag Carpet”. The thirteenth and final episode title has not yet been released.

Now that you have all the details, check out the last season of the show. The finale airs February 18, 2015.
