As Aria and Ezra, Lucy Hale and Ian Harding have such undeniable chemistry that they always get asked if they are dating. To the disappointment of Ezria fans everywhere, they are both taken, but still have a extremely close friendship.
On the show, they have taken a break this season because Aria is going off to college and Ezra doesn’t want her to resent him. As the show airs its Spring Finale on March 24, celebrate the lovable costars off-screen.
1. They Will Never Date
Although fans would love for the couple to be a real-life pair, it’s not happening.
In an interview with Seventeen, Hale said:
No, sorry. He’s a very beautiful man, and he’s very charming, and I know people say this all the time, but we know each other too well. But that’s why it works—that’s why our chemistry is effortless.
In their joint interview with Ryan Seacrest, he asked about their off-screen relationship. “You know, we make out with each other for a living, so why not expand our horizons,” Harding said. When the host asked if they considered it, Hale said, “I’m not gonna lie, maybe at the beginning, but now, it’s like…”

2. She Knew He Was the Right Man to Play Ezra
“I remember the moment that Ian walked in the room, and I said, ‘That’s the guy! Take away his terrible sweater vest that he’s wearing, and that’s the guy,’ and that was it,” Hale told Seventeen. “I read with 15 guys and he was the first or second one. Some were way too creepy, some were not creepy enough. And Ian was just riiiight on the border of being creepy but still approachable.”
3. They Know They Have Chemistry
“Ezria is what it is because of me and Ian’s chemistry,” Hale said in the clip above. “It’s a wonderful sort of intimacy,” Harding added.
After five seasons together, the actors are so comfortable with each other that they don’t worry about their kissing scenes anymore. “For the pilot, I remember, I was so anxious…now she’s lucky if I brush my teeth that day,” Harding told Seacrest.
Their chemistry has sparked countless fanfiction. One called Follow/FavNow or Never: A Lucian One Shot has the premise, “He has loved her since the first day he met her. He has always been there for her, has always been her rock. After an eventful day at work, he’s finally to go from best friend to boyfriend, but how to tell her his feelings?”
Another with the plot, “Lucy’s sick, and Ian’s there to make her feel better,” was posted on the FanFiction site.
4. They Both Have Significant Others
Hale is happily dating a British drummer, Adam Pitts, and Harding just revealed to People that he is taken and has been for four years! “I think what happens is the moment that you open that up and the moment that you talk about it it’s now open for everybody to discuss,” he explained to the magazine. “And, in this line of work, you have to just reveal and give so much of yourself over and over again, that to have something private is kind of a novelty. So, yeah, that’s why I’ve kept it quiet and I really won’t say much else about it other than it’s awesome.”
Although the costars do love each other, the feelings are only platonic. In the Instagram picture above, that Hale posted on Harding’s birthday, she wrote these sweet words about her costar:
Happy birthday to one of the kindest, funniest souls I have the pleasure of knowing. Ian, you are such a breath of fresh air and I love the hell out of you! Thanks for being an amazing costar, supporter and friend. Enjoy your day duuuude. @ianmharding
5. She ‘Punk’d’ Him
In Season 9 of Punk’d, Hale pulled off a prank on her costar. Harding is tricked into helping a tag artist’s team help set a graffiti record, and is caught by the fake police and questioned.

When Bullett asked if he was mad, he said, “Oh, God. No, actually, that was the thing, it came off really well, and I actually thought it was really cool. Not to mention, it was Punk’d! I remember watching that when I was a kid.”
