A Canadian teenager was singing an Ed Sheeran song at a charity concert in a mall when it quickly became a duet that she’d never forget. Sydney Bourbeau got a shock when the UK superstar himself joined her on stage on the afternoon of June 14. The two belted out his hit “Thinking Out Loud” together. At the time of writing the video has nearly 3 million views on YouTube.
Here’s what you need to know about Sheeran’s new singing partner:
1. She Thought Sheeran Was Coming to Fix Her Mic When He Joined Her On Stage
Bourbeau, 13, was singing at the West Edmonton Mall for an Edmonton Humane Society fundraiser. She told the Edmonton Journal what she thought when Sheeran, who happened to be in the mall, walked up on stage with her: “I was like, should I stop? I didn’t want to stop, but I wanted to talk to him. This is, like, the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” She also told the media that when Sheeran got up on stage with her, Bourbeau thought he was someone who was coming to fix her mic.
2. Sheeran Then Invited Bourbeau & Her Mother to His Concert That Night
The fundraiser was organized by the Resonate Music School and Studio. The Edmonton Journal reports that the event raised $10,500 for the humane society. Bourbeau says she’s been singing “forever” and that “I was so happy that he did that. It was incredible.” Later, Sheeran invited the singer and her mother to his concert in Rexall Place.
3. Her Mother Said Sydney’s Media Interviews Are Causing Her Heart Failure
Her mother, Heather, has been documenting her daughter’s media whirlwind tour via Facebook. Bourbeau has appeared on radio and TV shows across Edmonton. Heather wrote about all of the appearances saying “Syd is on Canada AM tomorrow 6am the 2 other shows after that CTV…. can any one say heart failure ha ha.”
4. Bourbeau Is Being Celebrated on Twitter
Bourbeau is getting some serious love on Twitter from members of Sheeran’s devoted fan base.
5. Sheeran Is Now a Hero for Edmonton’s Humane Society
From the moment the idea of creating a new-age music school was conceived, we at Resonate have strived to continuously identify ways the needs of music students could be better met.
By refusing to allow ourselves to be confined by traditional industry practices or pressured to do things the way they’ve always been done, we have innovated ways to elevate the experience of these students. We believe that the process of learning music should be every bit as amazing as music itself.
The group also thanked Ed Sheeran for his contribution on their page.
