Sarah Koenig has announced that the hit podcast Serial will have not only a season two, but also a season three. Koenig wrote to fans in an email blast:
We are hard at work reporting not one, but two distinct new stories… This means we’re planning on a third season of ‘Serial’. And we hope it means we can reduce the amount of time between the end of Season Two and the beginning of Season Three.
The second season of Serial is slated to be released sometime in autumn 2015, with season three coming out in spring 2016. No further information has been released by the production team as to exact dates or potential storylines, but Heavy will stay on it as information is released. The first episode of Serial season one came out on October 3, 2014.
The first season told the story of convicted murderer Adnan Syed, who was incarcerated for the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee, a 17-year-old student at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore, Maryland. Serial quickly reached #1 on podcast downloads and was honored with a 2014 Peabody Award which, according to their website, “recognize[s] when storytelling is done well in electronic media.” Following the season one finale, Syed’s appeal of his conviction to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals was accepted.
