With all the bad press surrounding Miss USA co-owner Donald Trump, many were fearful that the pageant would not air this year, but Reelz network came to the rescue. Reelz CEO Stan E. Hubbard told ABC News that:
As one of only a few independent networks, we decided to exercise our own voice and committed ourselves to bringing this pageant to American viewers everywhere … I completely understand why millions of people were offended by what Donald Trump said. I think his comments were incredibly insensitive and wrong. I disagree with them completely and totally. I also believe this pageant is as nonpolitical.
In Trump’s June presidential campaign, he basically said that many Mexicans bring drugs, crime and rape to America. As a result, Univision and NBC had dropped the pageant from their programming and cut ties with Donald Trump.
