The entire filmgoing world seems convinced that 2016 will be the year when Leonardo DiCaprio finally ascends to the pantheon of the greats by winning an Academy Award. The star is nominated for his role in The Revenant. On his arm at the awards ceremony is his 71-year-old German born mother Irmelin Indenbirken. Her appearance with her son will come as sad news to those who were hoping that DiCaprio was hooking up with British model Roxy Horner.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Of All the Thousands of Women That Her Son Has Been Linked With, Irmelin ‘Hated’ Rihanna the Most

According to a report from OK Magazine, Irmelin was sick of her son dating “bimbos.” The gossip mag, quoting a source, said that Irmelin had the hardest time with Rihanna. That anonymous person said, “Irmelin is sick of seeing Leo waste his life away with these bimbos.” The piece then mentions Toni Garrn, Blake Lively and Gisele as some of the women the actor has been linked to.

The source continues, “[Irmelin is] blind to Leo’s faults and thinks all he’s missing is a clean-living princess type with good breeding, who can give her the granddaughter she’s been desperately hoping for for years.”

Apparently Irmelin would have preferred if her son had stuck by Israel supermodel Bar Refaeli, saying, “She adored Bar, but since then it’s been one loser after another as far as she’s concerned.”

Leo was last dating Sports Illustrated model Kelly Rohrbach, the couple broke up in December 2015.

2. She Divorced Leo’s Dad George DiCaprio When the Actor Was 1

In a glowing feature on Irmelin in German Way, it details that she grew up in New York City with her family after they emigrated from Germany in 1955.

After meeting George DiCaprio in a New York college in 1965, the couple married and moved to Los Angeles where Leo was born in 1974. A year later, Irmelin divorced her husband. Leo told the Los Angeles Times about how the young family lived in California, “It was definitely a rough neighborhood, but it was cool. I got to see a lot of stuff. It’s good to grow up like that, I think. It’s good to see that side at a young age.”

A separate article on the couple says that they traveled around the U.S. as hippies. That piece says that they split up while Leo was away on vacation with his grandparents.

His father then remarried a woman named Peggy Farrar in 1995. She is a Amritdhari Sikh.

3. A Pregnant Irmelin First Felt Leo Kick While She Was Looking at a Leonardo Da Vinci Painting

On Leo’s IMDb page, it says that Irmelin first got the idea to name her son Leonardo after he kicked while she was looking at a Leonardo Da Vinci work in Italy. He said in an interview, “My mom felt me kicking while they were looking at a Leonardo da Vinci painting in the Uffizi gallery in Florence and they took it as a message.”

Coincidentally, in 2015, a typical Fox News gaffe saw a presenter credit Leo with painting the Mona Lisa.

Meanwhile on Irmelin’s IMDb page, it says that she’s had cameos in two of her son’s hit movies The Beach and Blood Diamond. When Leo was growing up, she worked as a legal secretary. Her ex-husband contributed around $20 a week for his son’s upbringing.

4. Irmelin Was Born in an Air Raid Shelter in World War II

Irmelin was born in the small German village of Oer-Erkenschwick in February 1945. In a 1998 interview with German magazine Hellwger Anzeiger, Leo’s grandmother Helene Indenbirken, spoke about her daughter’s upbringing.

She explained that Irmelin was born in an air raid shelter during World War II. Russian-born Helene understates saying, “Those were hard times.” The family moved to the U.S. in 1955. She notes that some reports incorrectly states that the family emigrated in 1943.

The Indenbirken family moved to New York City. Helene says, “In New York we lived in a section with lots of Germans. In 1985 my husband and I left the “American lifestyle” behind and came back to Germany.” She also mentions that her daughter made sure to bring Leo to Germany during his youth.

Helene Indenbirken died in August 2008, reported People Magazine. Leo had in the past said about his grandmother, whom he referred to as Oma, “She is literally gangsta, and I mean that with an ‘a.’ She will tell people exactly what she thinks to their face and look them in the eye.”

5. Her Boyfriend Is the Father-In-Law of the Drummer from the Black Keys

In July 2013, Page Six reported that Leo had thrown an elaborate July 4 party that was attended by Irmelin and her boyfriend, David Ward.

The tabloid notes that the couple had been together since the summer of 2012. They were set up on a blind date by his daughter, Emily Ward, who is married to the drummer from the Black Keys, Patrick Carney.

Complex Magazine has a brilliantly funny recap of David Ward’s Instagram page and his newfound celebrity. On social media, he goes by the moniker @dosequisman.

In an interview with Vogue magazine, actress Dakota Johnson described David Ward’s daughter Emily as her “best friend in the whole world.”

I love David and Irmelin. I’m so glad she has her life now, and Leo must be very pleased to see her settle with such a gracious man. Big DiCaprio doesn’t even deserve this jewel!
