She also brought photos of other bruises sustained over the course of their marriage.
Here’s what you need to know.
1. Heard Cited ‘Irreconcilable Differences’ When She Filed Her Divorce Petition
Heard filed her divorce petition on Sunday, May 22 in Los Angeles Superior Court citing “irreconcilable differences” and asked for spousal support, according to CNN. The couple married in February 2015 in a private civil service in their home and had no children.
A judge has denied her request for spousal support and attorney’s fees. Heard is allowed to live in the family home, but cannot have possession to their Range Rover. Depp can also have contact with one of their two dogs, which caused a stir when the couple tried to bring their pets into Australia last year under a false passengers card. They settled the dispute in April after they filmed an awkward PSA video, according to The Guardian.
2. The Couple Didn’t Sign a Pre-Nuptial Agreement
Heard and Depp didn’t sign a pre-nuptial agreement before they tied the knot, sources told TMZ. In response to Heard’s divorce petition, Depp’s lawyer asked the judge to reject her claim for spousal support.
Depp’s net worth is estimated at $400 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. Forbes reported that he made $30 million last year. In 2015, Depp starred in the films Black Mass and Mortdecai, and reprises his role as the Mad Hatter in Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass, now in theaters.
3. Heard Is Claiming Domestic Abuse Against Depp
Heard arrived to the courthouse on Friday, May 27 with a bruise on the right side of her face. She claims that she sustained the injury when Depp smashed his iPhone against her face last Saturday Night, according to TMZ.
Heard claims the couple got into an argument and Depp broke several objects in their apartment. She was on the phone at the time and when he tried to take the phone away from her, she told her friend to call 911. When police arrived on the scene, Depp was gone and Heard refused to file a report.
A source for the Los Angeles Police Department told TMZ that the officers had no reason to believe Depp struck Heard. She also was tagged in an Instagram photo the next day that showed no evidence of the injury.
Heard also told the judge that she’s the victim of ongoing domestic abuse. Her claim is backed up by a source who told People that the argument on Saturday wasn’t “an isolated event” but “only the latest incident.”
4. A Judge Issued a Restraining Order Against Depp
A judge has granted Heard’s request for a restraining order against Depp. Her husband must stay 100 feet away. Depp’s currently in Europe promoting Alice Through the Looking Glass.
Heard wrote in the court documents obtained by ABC News:
I live in fear that Johnny will return to [our home] unannounced to terrorize me, physically and emotionally. There also have been several prior incidents of domestic violence with Johnny, in particular there was one severe incident in December 2015 when I truly feared that my life was in danger.
She also accused Depp of having a substance abuse problem and said he was physically, verbally and emotionally abusive throughout their relationship, which began when they started dating in 2012 after meeting on the set of 2011’s The Rum Diary. She requested the court order her husband go into anger management, but the judge turned down her request, according to TMZ.
5. Depp’s Mother Passed Away a Few Days Before Heard Filed for Divorce
Depp lost his mother, Betty Sue Palmer, on May 20 at age 81. Her death came a few days before Heard filed for divorce. The actor and his mother shared a close relationship and her name was tattooed on Depp’s upper left arm inside a heart. Palmer also accompanied her son to the 2004 Academy Awards when he was nominated for Best Actor for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
. The actor’s family, specifically his mother, never cared much for his relationship with Heard, according to Us Weekly. She did accompany the couple for a New Year’s Eve dinner in 2014 at Ago Restaurant in West Hollywood, California. “It was obvious that Johnny was at dinner with his two favorite ladies,” a source told People at the time. “He seemed very, very happy.” Depp’s rep issued this statement about the divorce on May 26 to Us Weekly: Given the brevity of this marriage and the most recent and tragic loss of his mother, Johnny will not respond to any of the salacious false stories, gossip, misinformation and lies about his personal life. Hopefully the dissolution of this short marriage will be resolved quickly.
