Joel Schiffman is an American financier based in New York City and Boston. He is currently dating Hoda Kotb, who was named as the permanent replacement for Matt Lauer as the host on NBC’s “Today” show. The two are also parents to Haley Joy Kotb, who the couple adopted in February 2017. The couple has been together for four years, marking their anniversary in June.
In a People Magazine interview, Kotb said that she had breast cancer and her treatments made it impossible for her to conceive.
“One of the things in my life I’ve always wanted was to be a mom,” Kotb told People. “Sometimes in your life, things just don’t work out for whatever reason, so you say, ‘Well, I wasn’t meant to have that.’ But it was really hard to come to terms with it.”
Kotb announced the news on social media and Matt Lauer broke the news during the broadcast.
“She’s a Valentine’s baby so she’s a little nugget,” Kotb told Today. “She is the love of my life!”
While Kotb talked openly about her relationship, she did not reveal the man’s name until over a year into their relationship. Until then, she nicknamed him “Boots.”
Kotb was previously married to tennis coach Burzis Kanga for two years, before their divorce in 2007.

1. He’s Been Dating Kotb Since 2013
The Today Show host was careful about keeping her relationship a secret and only revealed her boyfriend’s name over a year after they started dating. According to People magazine, Kotb and Schiffman met at a Wall Street event. Even though she was speaking at the event, she almost didn’t go according to The Daily Mail.
“I almost didn’t go out the night I met him,” Kotb told Carson Daily on Today in January 2015 after the Daily Mail published photos of Kotb with Schiffman. “‘Cause you know how you don’t feel like it because it’s raining and icky and why not just watch a Law & Order rerun and stay home and eat potato chips – and I’m so glad I went out that night because it was a chance meeting that ended up being kind of a life transforming event for me.”
After the event, she stuck around to sign some autographs, according to Today.com. Schiffman was in line to get an autograph, and when he approached. “Who should I write it to?” she asked. “And he said, ‘How about to me?’ And I said, ‘How ’bout to you?'” Kotb told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live. She checked to see if he had a wedding ring, and he didn’t, so Kotb moved forward.
A contact from the event emailed the man, who turned out to be Schiffman, who emailed Hoda back. They went on a date and clicked.
Kotb, who’s been married once before, would even be open to getting married again, according to E! Online. That’s how solid the pair are. They celebrated their third anniversary in June 2016.
A source told Closer Weekly that the couple will poossibly “tie the knot by early summer.”
2. He’s a Financial Executive
Schiffman is Vice President & Director, Financial Institutions at Janus Capital Group, according to his LinkedIn profile.
He began working there in August 2015. Prior to that, he worked at Columbia Threadneedle Investments, a financial management company, as a Senior Relationship Manager. He’s been working in finance since 1987.

He attended the University of Pennsylvania for graduate school, where he became a Certified Investment Management Analyst at UPenn’s Wharton School. He graduated in 1995.
4. He’s Divorced With One Daughter
According to the Daily Mail, Schiffman has been married once before and has one adult daughter. “His daughter goes to school in France for like a study abroad thing,” Kotb said on her show in 2015.
The pair visited her in Paris. Schiffman’s daughter and Kotb apparently get along very well. After visiting the host in New York on Today, Schiffman’s daughter posted a message, calling her “awesome.” His daughter, Kyle, graduated this year, and Kotb posted a congratulatory photo of Kyle and her father on Instagram, writing “Congrats Kyle!!!”
In an interview with Health.com in 2015, Kotb said it was a dream of hers to have a summer camp for underprivileged kids, inspired by her own desire to have a child.
“When I’m walking down the street with my boyfriend [New York City financier Joel Schiffman], I stop every baby,” Kotb told Health.com. “Seriously. It’s totally crazy. He’ll just walk slowly next to me. I think that, because I didn’t have my own kids, the summer camp will fulfill me in that way.”
5. The 2 Moved in Together in October 2016
Schiffman was born in 1958, and Kotb was born in 1964. They met in 2013, when Kotb was 48 and Schiffman was 54. The couple celebrated his 58th birthday at the Rangers in 2016. Kotb even wrote a sweet birthday message to Schiffman on the jumbotron.
During her Sirius XM satellite radio show The Hoda Show in October 2016, Kotb announced that the two were finally moving in together.
“It’s been so long since I’ve lived with someone, I’m a little concerned with me – not him. Like how I am, as a human? You know, it’s not going to be easy for poor Joel,” Kotb said.
“I was afraid to tell my own mother that I was moving in with my boyfriend,” she explained on the show. “I was afraid. I don’t why! I know it sounds weird – I’ve been married, it’s like whatever. Anyway, it’s all happening. Hocus pocus. We’re shopping, we’re cohabitating. It’s a little weird, right?”
