Before its Thursday night premiere, USA Network new narco-drama Queen of the South already has quite the backstory. The show is an adaptation of the Telemundo series, La Reina del Sur, which is based on the Arturo Pérez-Reverte novel of the same name. The real-life Reina del Sur is Marllory Chacón, who was implicated in the Panama Papers earlier this year, according to Vanity Fair. Also implicated was Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera aka El Chapo, who was interviewed by Sean Penn for Rolling Stone thanks to an introduction by Kate del Castillo, who starred as Teresa in the Telemundo version of the book. Got all that?
In the USA drama, Brazilian actress Alice Braga stars as Teresa Mendoza, a woman who flees to America to find refuge after her drug-dealing boyfriend is unexpectedly murdered in Mexico. In the States, she teams up with an unlikely figure from her past to bring down the leader of the very drug trafficking ring that has her on the run. The show will feature both English and Spanish dialogue with subtitles.
