When does Season 7 of Game of Thrones return? (HBO)

When does Season 7 of Game of Thrones start? The show’s sixth season is coming to an end tonight with the finale, “The Winds of Winter.” We’ll likely be left with a major plot twist that is going to be very difficult to wait for. But how long will you have to wait to find out how the storylines are resolved?

Here’s what you need to know.

We’ll likely be waiting a long time before we can see the show again. Game of Thrones is one of those series that only airs once a year, with no mid-season breaks. Each season is 10 episodes long, which makes the wait in between even tougher to bear. Although a specific start date for Season 7 hasn’t yet been announced, we will likely see it begin in April 2017.

Season 1 premiered on April 17, 2011. The premieres of the next seasons were on the following dates:

  • Season 2: April 1, 2012
  • Season 3: March 31, 2013
  • Season 4: April 6, 2014
  • Season 5: April 12, 2015
  • Season 6: April 24, 2016.

Every year, the premieres are starting a little later in April. So Season 7 will likely follow this pattern, starting around mid-to-late April 2017.

The show goes back into production in July and there are already a lot of rumors and speculation flying about locations of filming and cast who will be featured. The showrunners have hinted that Season 7 may be much shorter, only seven episodes long versus the typical 10-episode length of a season. But HBO has not  yet confirmed exactly how many episodes we’ll be able to enjoy in the next season.
