San Diego Comic-Con: Where Is ‘Star Wars’ This Year?

Since Disney and Lucasfilm now host their own Star Wars Celebration events, there is little reason for the studios to use San Diego Comic-Con International to make a big splash. Although it was only a year ago when Disney guided fans to a live Star Wars concert after the Hall H panel for The Force Awakens, there is a very small official Star Wars presence at the convention this year. Of course, you will still spot some Stormtroopers and Rey cosplayers, but Disney pulled back since Star Wars Celebration was only last weekend.

During that convention, Disney unveiled a new promotional behind-the-scenes video for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the new trailer for Star Wars Rebels season three. For SDCC, it was publishing that took center stage for Star Wars on Friday. Del Rey, Disney-Lucasfilm Press and Marvel unveiled their future Star Wars books, which all take place in the new canon established since the Disney takeover of Lucasfilm.

It is also worth noting that plenty of brands have Star Wars exclusives. Hasbro’s main exclusive figure is the 6-inch Obi-Wan Kenobi from A New Hope, which comes with a table and Princess Leia hologram. Remaining stock will be available at Hasbro Toy Shop after the show. Hasbro is also selling the Jyn Erso Rogue One 6=inch figure in a special box and the unmasked Kylo Ren.

Funko has two Pop! vinyl exclusives. One is Han Solo with Chewbacca’s bowcaster, which is also available from GameStop, and the other is BB-8 with thumbs up, a shared exclusive with Hot Topic.

There are also plenty of other Star Wars-related panels on the schedule. Friday also had Star Wars: The Science Awakens, in which NASA engineer Kim Steadman talked about the science of the franchise. Hasbro had their Star Wars panel. Lucasfilms’ Anita Castellar hosted a Collectibles Update panel on other Star Wars products. There is also a trivia panel on the schedule for Friday night.

During the publishing panel, it was revealed that Michael Kogge will write Poe Dameron: Flight Log, and that an adult coloring book will be released in conjunction with Rogue One.
