Season 3 of the critically beloved Netflix animated series BoJack Horseman premieres today, with all the episodes available for you to binge at your disposal. A show equal parts about Hollywood and depression, the show stars Will Arnett as the titular character. Arnett, like the show, has been praised by critics and fans for his performance, bringing both humor and pathos to the role.
It’s something of a breakthrough for Arnett, who has been a recognizable face in film and television for years now. Some of those series lasted for several years; many did not. But his appearances in them made him a cult favorite amongst comedy fans, which helped him steadily acquire more work. At 46, the man has amassed quite a wealth from the many, many projects he has appeared in. How much, though?
Here’s what you need to know.
1. Arnett’s Net Worth is $12 Million
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Will Arnett’s net worth is estimated at about $12 million. Other sites, like The Richest, confirm that number. Their reasoning for this number is simply the incredible output he’s had over the years in both television and film. The Richest also notes that, following the cult success of Arrested Development, Arnett “set a niche for himself” that helped him get more roles.
2. He’s Been in the Main Cast of Many TV Shows, One of Which He Created, and Made $125,000 Per Episode On The Millers
As mentioned, Arnett’s face has been seen on quite a few television programs. When it comes to the main cast, several stand out. His most notable one is, unsurprisingly, Arrested Development, a low-watched sitcom in its time that developed into such a beloved cult hit that it was eventually brought back by Netflix.
But Arrested Development wasn’t his only main role in a television show, nor, arguably, was it his most lucrative. Celebrity Net Worth claimed that when Arnett worked on The Millers, a CBS show that lasted two seasons, he made $125,000 per episode playing the main character. He was also the star of the short-lived Running Wilde, and in the main cast of shows like Up All Night, The Increasingly Poor Decision of Todd Margaret, and The Mike O’Malley Show. In addition, his guest appearances on 30 Rock were not only fan favorites, but got him multiple Emmy Award nominations.
3. His Distinctive Voice Has Been Found in Numerous Animated Series & Films, As Well As Advertisements
BoJack Horseman is Will Arnett getting the chance to star in an animated series, but you’ve been hearing his voice for years. Even before any of his breakout live-action roles, Arnett was making money in the entertainment industry as far back as the 90s doing voice work for commercials.
After becoming more of a known presence in Hollywood, Arnett was able to secure voiceover work in some short-lived animated TV series, like Comedy Central’s Freak Show or FOX’s Sit Down, Shut Up. That soon translated to film voice work, such as in Horton Hears a Who! and Despicable Me.
His most popular voice role in the mainstream, however, is his role as Batman in The Lego Movie, which was the 5th highest grossing film of 2014. The movie’s popularity, as well as that of Arnett’s Batman, resulted in The Lego Batman Movie being put into production. It’s set to come out in 2017 with Arnett starring, an opportunity to make even more money.
4. He Has Played Major Supporting Roles in Several Successful Blockbuster Films
On several occasions, Arnett was given the chance to star in major motion pictures. These pictures where Arnett was the focus, such as Let’s Go To Prison and The Brothers Solomon, flopped and left theaters almost instantly. Arnett was not quite able to become a movie star.
Where he has succeeded instead, however, is in character acting, appearing as a supporting role or comic relief in all sorts of films. The most successful of these films was likely the 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, and he appeared in the 2016 sequel as well. He has also appeared in successful comedies such as RV and Blades of Glory. Arnett’s filmography is so profoundly stacked that it’s no wonder he’s amassed such an impressive worth.
5. He Has Been Divorced Twice, Most Recently To Amy Poehler in 2014
Arnett has been married twice, each lasting different amounts of time but both, sadly, ending in the same fashion. In 1994, Arnett married Penelope Ann Miller, a Golden Globe-nominated actress who has appeared in such films as Carlito’s Way and The Artist.
His longer marriage was to legendary comedy actress and improviser Amy Poehler. The couple married in 2003 and had two children, but in 2012 they separated. In 2014 it turned from separation to divorce, with Arnett filing for it. Rumors were that the couple’s romance simply “fizzled out,” but the couple has kept a tight lid on what happened. Poehler’s memoir noted that she did not want to get into the details of it, but also said that while it was “too sad and too personal” to discuss, she said that regarding her children, she was “beyond grateful he is their father, and I don’t think a ten-year marriage constitutes failure.”
