The 49-year-old Hermann was born to German parents in New York City, but he didn’t learn to speak English until he was 10 years old. In a 2011 interview with Broadway.com while starring on the stage in War Horse, Hermann explained that his German parents moved back to Germany when he was 2 months old. When he was 10, they moved back to the U.S.

“I learned English when I got here,” Hermann explained. “I think I got in right under the wire: Language patterns solidify at 10, 11, 12, so I was able to learn English fairly easily, with no accent. I didn’t do speech or vocal work to get rid of the German accent; I was just lucky.”

Hermann said that his parents still only speak German, so he has to continue using the language at home. He even used German around his son, August, who was born in June 2006.

Hermann has a recurring role on Law & Order: SVU, playing defense attorney Trevor Langan. He made his debut on the show in 2002 and has appeared in 30 episodes, including an episode in 2015. The couple met on the set of the show in 2001.

Hargitay told InStyle that she tried to joke with him, but he didn’t think the joke was funny. A few months later, he suggested they go to church. “I just about passed out when I saw him there,” she said. “I thought, ‘That’s my husband.'”

Hargitay and Hermann married on August 28, 2004, People Magazine reported at the time. They married in Santa Barbara, California and the bride wore a Carolina Herrera gown. They had 200 guests and a gospel choir singing “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” during the ceremony.

“They’re mad about each other. And they’re hilariously funny together,” wedding planner Yifat Oren told People.

3. They Adopted Two Children Within Six Months in 2011

Hermann and Hargitay have three children, although two of them are adopted. They adopted daughter Amaya and son Andrew within six months of each other in 2011.

An insider told Us Weekly that Andrew was born prematurely in the U.S. Amaya is just four months older than Andrew.

August was born when Hargitay was 42 and, as he grew up, he wanted siblings. Hermann and Hargitay decided that adoption would be the best way to expand their family.

“August wanted siblings, and Peter and I both envisioned this big family because we both come from that. Plus, we just had so much love to give,” Hargitay told Good Housekeeping. “I was really letting the chips fall as they might, because I do think so much is up to God. I always said, ‘I don’t know how this is going to end up. I don’t know if I’m going to get pregnant and have twins. I don’t know…if somebody’s going to leave a baby on my doorstep.’ But I really did think that down the line, Peter and I would adopt a child. That was always part of the plan.”

In 2013, Hermann starred in Stephen Frears’ Philomena, in which Judi Dench starred as a woman who searched for her son and Steve Coogan played the journalist who told her story. Hermann played Pete Olsson in the film. Philomena earned four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

In an interview with Variety at a New York screening in 2013, Hermann said it was extraordinary to see Dench work.

“I came home every night scared he was going to leave me for Judi Dench,” Hargitay joked.

Hermann’s other film credits include United 93, The Treatment, Edge of Darkness, Trouble with the Curve and Our Idiot Brother. He started his film and TV career on Guiding Light. He played Jack Boyle on Blue Bloods in 2012-2014.

Hermann currently stars on the TVLand show Younger, which also stars Hilary Duff, Sutton Foster, Debi Mazar, Miriam Schor, Nico Tortorella and Molly Bernard. Hermann plays Charles Books, who has two daughters and is the senior editor of Empirical Press. Schor’s character has fallen in love with Charles.

In an interview with Parade, Hermann said that the show’s writing is what makes it so good. The show was created by Darren Starr (Sex and the City).

“They’ve created, in the context, or in the format of a half-hour comedy, compelling, layered people whose layers are revealed as they interact with each other. And I think that they do that really beautifully,” Hermann told Parade.

The third season of Younger kicks off on September 28.
