Veterans Day Movies to Watch on Netflix 2016

Saving Private Ryan

Today is Veterans Day, when we honor the men and women who have served in the U.S. military. Since many of us do not have first-hand experience of war, the great films on the topic allow us to understand - even just a little bit - the sacrifices they have made to protect our country. A handful of these films are available to stream on Netflix. Unfortunately, the selection of true classics, especially those relating to World War I, is very slim. But here's a few you can stream right now.

Up first is Steven Spielberg's classic Saving Private Ryan. Set during World War II, it begins with the D-Day invasion of Normandy on Omaha Beach. But that's just the beginning of the visceral film that earned Spielberg his second Best Director Oscar. Tom Hanks plays Army Rangers Captain John Miller, who leads a team to find Private James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon) after Ryan's brothers are killed in other battles. It's not only one of the best World War II movies, but one of the best war movies period. (YouTube)
