Harvey Fierstein as Edna Turnblad in 'Hairspray Live!'
Harvey Fierstein is the creator of many great musicals and projects like Hairspray Live!. Previously, he also starred as Edna Turnblad in "Hairspray" on Broadway, so, naturally, he was the clear choice for the role in the 2016 NBC adaptation. His raspy voice in unlike any other and he is a revered actor in the industry. Many recognize him from his roles in Mrs. Doubtfire and Independence Day, but he has played countless parts in theatre, television and on the big screen. The character Edna is the overbearing mother of lead character Tracy and Fierstein was asked to return to the role by producer Neil Meron, who told Broadway World: The truth of the matter is we hired Harvey to adapt the teleplay from the Broadway musical, and as we were going through the process, it just kind of really made sense to have Harvey recreate his role. He didn't get the opportunity to do it in the film and we know he had really strong emotions about not being able to preserve his performance, and we thought that this is the way to do it. I'm actually the one who called him up to tell him. Meron said that Fierstein was quiet at first, which is unlike him, but he feels that Fierstein was very moved by the gesture.
