My 600 Lb. Life on TLC, airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT, and the show follows the medical journeys of morbidly obese people as they try to better their situations. Tonight’s episode focuses on Kirsten Perez as she realizes she is headed for death unless she changes her lifestyle. Get to know Perez, her family and her rocky past.

1. Perez Is a Former Drug Addict

Kirsten Perez is a former drug addict who successfully kicked that habit. Unfortunately, she developed another toxic addiction in her toxic relationship with food. Monsters And Critics reports that Perez’s drug addiction appears to stem from an unstable childhood, during which she ran away from her parents’ home.

She began hanging out with the wrong crowd and even became pregnant twice.

2. Her Son Neiko Is Rebelling Against Her

People reports that Perez is a mother of two children. According to TLC, she is at risk of losing her troubled son if she doesn’t make a change. Teen son Neiko has moved away and tells cameras that:

I don’t feel like my mom is able to be a mom to me. It’s more like a sibling. We fight back and forth, back and forth all day.

Kirsten confessed that:

Part of me is sad that he’s leaving but part of me is relieved too.

When she was younger, she had given up custody of her kids to her parents.

3. Her Mother Believes That Soon Her Daughter Will Be Bed-Bound

Perez’s family, particularly her mother Cris McKee, is worried about Perez’s health and Perez has admitted that:

I hardly get out of the house because it hurts just to move. But sometimes I get stir-crazy so I push myself and try to get out … Losing my mobility is a death sentence.

Perez’s mother is concerned about her daughter’s weight and says:

If Kirstin doesn’t take some dramatic steps to change her eating, she’s going to lose her mobility, and be bed-bound.

4. Perez Seeks Out Surgeon Younan Nowzaradan, M.D., F.A.C.S. For Assistance

In hopes of getting surgery to improve her condition, Perez moved to Houston in hopes of being treated by surgeon Younan Nowzaradan, who is often featured on the show.

5. When She Couldn’t Fit Into a Car, She Knew It Was Time for Change

On the show, Perez’s mother tries to take her to a yard sale, but things don’t go as planned. Perez can’t seem to fit in the car and exclaimed:

Getting out to the car should be two seconds, but it takes me like, ten minutes … I can’t fit. I can’t do it. It’s not working … This has never happened before. I’ve never been so big that I couldn’t fit in a car.

Mom McKee then said:

If I can’t get that door shut then I don’t know what we’re going to do. I’m going to really have a hard time trying to get her out of this house.
