Almost two months after “Medusa” and the Invasion! crossover with the other DC Comics shows, Supergirl is finally back to resume her second year as National City’s favorite hero. The highly anticipated “Supergirl Lives” episode airs on The CW at 8:00 p.m. ET on Monday, January 23. Read on for a preview of the episode.

“Supergirl Lives” is the first episode of Supergirl directed by filmmaker Kevin Smith (Clerks, Yoga Hosers). Its title is a reference to Superman Lives, the aborted 1990s Superman movie Smith wrote a script for that Tim Burton was going to direct. In the episode, a woman – played by Smith’s daughter Harley Quinn Smith – goes missing and Kara investigates her disappearance. Meanwhile, Roulette is back and Supergirl and Mon-El have to go to Slaver’s Moon. Unfortunately, they have a red sun there, so the two will have to rely on their wits instead of powers to help them.

The long wait for a new episode of Supergirl wasn’t completely devoid of news. The CW renewed the show for a third season and also announced that The Music Meister will be the villain in a musical crossover with The Flash.

EPISODE DESCRIPTION: “Supergirl Lives” – Kara (Melissa Benoist) is moved by the story of a missing woman named Izzy (guest star Harley Quinn Smith) and decides to investigate despite Snapper Carr’s (guest star Ian Gomez) order to leave it alone. Kara takes Mon-El (Chris Wood) with her to the last place Izzy was seen and the duo find themselves thrust through a portal to another planet, Slaver’s Moon, where the downtrodden are sold as slaves. The leader of the trafficking ring is none other than Roulette (guest star Dichen Lachman). To make matters worse, Slaver’s Moon has a red sun, which means Kara and Mon-El are stripped of their powers and stuck on the planet with no way home. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Alex (Chyler Leigh) blames herself for Kara’s disappearance, fearing she’s become too focused on her new relationship with Maggie (guest star Floriana Lima) and too complacent in watching out for her sister.
