Following the conclusion of The Young Pope last week, HBO has another star-studded event in store for audiences. Big Little Lies, an adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s hit novel starring Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, begins tonight. The first of seven episodes debuts at 9:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, February 19. Read on for a preview of the series.

Big Little Lies is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Australian writer Liane Moriarty. It’s about three very different women who live in the same idyllic, small town. One is a beautiful mother married to a rich businessman and has perfect twins. The other is a can-do mother who is great at taking care of her child, who prefers to be with her divorced father. And the third is a single mother who doesn’t really fit in with the crowd. Their lives will all come crashing down when dark secrets arise and someone ends up dead.

The American TV version moves the setting of the book from Australia to California. It was adapted by prolific TV writer and producer David E. Kelly, who is also behind Boston Legal, Boston Public and Ally McBeal. The show also marks a reunion between Wild team Witherspoon and director Jean-Marc Vallee. It’s the first time the Dallas Buyers Club director has worked with Kidman.

Big Little Lies will air over seven Sundays.
