Actor Bill Paxton, who died on February 25 at age 61, according to TMZ, had two children, James and Lydia Paxton. Their mother was Louise Newbury, Paxton’s second wife. Lydia is 19 years old and James is 22.
“It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Bill Paxton has passed away due to complications from surgery,” his family told TMZ.
On March 6, TMZ obtained Paxton’s death certificate, which shows that Paxton had a valve replacement surgeryt to fix an aortic aneurysm. Complications arose and he suffered a fatal stroke during the procedure.
Here’s a look at Lydia and James.
1. James Stars on USA’s ‘Eyewitness’
Like his father, James is an actor. He currently stars on USA Network’s Eyewitness. He plays Lukas Waldenbeck, which is his first regular acting role. The series is about two teen boys who witness a murder, but they don’t want to talk to police because one of them will have to come out as gay.
“[Lukas] doesn’t even acknowledge that being gay is a possibility. It’s his first time kissing and being intimate with a boy at all. It scares him a lot,” James told Entertainment Weekly. “He doesn’t realize that secrets of this magnitude can have some dangerous repercussions that affect everybody else in town.”
When EW asked James about his father’s reaction to him landing the role on Eyewitness, James said his father had a “sigh of relief” since he “never discouraged me from the business.”
“He always knew I could do it,” James told the magazine. “But he couldn’t believe it at first. He was so over the moon. It was such a great feeling, I almost cried. I hate to get emotional, but it was almost my way of telling him, ‘I could do this. You don’t have to worry about me. I can do this on my own.'”
In addition to acting, he worked as production assistant on 2014’s Nightcrawler. He also records songs.
2. Lydia Is a Student at Duke & Graduates in 2020
Lydia Paxton has an Instagram account. According to her bio, she is currently studying at Duke University and expects to graduate in 2020.
In an interview with Los Angeles Magazine, Paxton said Lydia is “more flamboyant and dramatic” like her mother. He did not intend to push her into the acting business.
3. James Worked With His Dad on ‘Texas Rising’
James was in Texas Rising, a History Channel miniseries that starred his father. However, he didn’t actually get any scenes with his father.
“He was really cool. I was there shooting a behind-the-scenes video for a making-of, so I was around him on set a lot. I was just picking up all I could from him, because he was such a leader on set. He keeps that morale with the crew and cast,” James told Entertainment Weekly.
James did get to work with his father on CBS’ Training Day, which only premiered this month.
James explained to Entertainment Weekly:
The executive producers approached him about bringing me into the show, because there’s a cool parallel and in this episode we just did [where] my character reminds his character of what he used to be like as a boy. They went, “This is perfect to play it. You’re really family.” I jumped at the possibility, because I’ve always wanted to work with him, and we don’t get to work together and share scenes. I did a scene with him yesterday, and it was one of the proudest moments I’ve had.
4. Their Mother Is Paxton’s Second Wife, Louise Newbury
Their father was married twice. He married Kelly Rowan in 1979, but their marriage lasted less than a year. In 1987, he married his second wife Louise Newbury, who is Lydia and James’ mother.
“We’ve been through it all,” Paxton told Los Angeles Magazine of his relationship with his wife. “She knew me when I was struggling. She was a student. We met on a bus in London. I’ve seen her give birth. I was with her when her father died. Then we mixed our blood watching these two kids grow up.”
5. James’ First Acting Role in ‘Spy Kids 3’ Came to Him by Chance
In an interview with Interview Magazine, James said that his first acting role came by chance. He was on the set of Spy Kids 3, which starred his father, when director Robert Rodriguez asked his father if James was interested in being in a scene.
“He said, ‘I think it’d be awesome if your character had a son in this scene, can you ask him if he’s into it?’ And my dad was like ‘Sure! I’m sure he’d be down,'” James recalled.
Although he got that early role, he wasn’t initially interested in film. He first studied journalism in college, but then switched to acting.
“As a little kid you have no inhibitions. In front of a camera you’re just like, ‘Oh, yeah, I got this,'” James told Interview. “I knew I had to go back and study if I was going to do this [professionally]—you still earn your stripes out here, no matter who you’re related to.”
