Lisa Marie Presley is accusing her estranged husband, guitarist Michael Lockwood, of having “disturbing” photos and videos of their 8-year-old twin daughters on his computer, E!News reports.
He has denied the allegations. Lockwood and Presley, the 49-year-old singer and daughter of Elvis Presley, have been going through a nasty divorce.
Presley filed divorce from Lockwood, 55, in 2016, citing irreconcilable differences in their relationship, according to the New York Daily News.
Presley is seeking custody of her daughters, while Lockwood is trying to get monthly spousal support from Presley, CBS News reports. Their assets will be divided through a post-nuptial agreement.
After filing for divorce in August 2016, Presley checked into rehab for a prescription pill addiction, US Weekly reported at the time.
“She’s doing OK but needed to get this under control,” a source told US Weekly. She was released from the “very expensive” facility, which costs about $400,000 a month, after about three months and has been living in her mother’s home in Beverley Hills, Lockwood said in court documents.
Jeff Struman, Lockwood’s lawyer, told CBS News the accusations are “highly sensational” and “inaccurate,” in a statement. In court documents, Lockwood said Presley, “has placed more value on trying to damage my reputation than on the fact that her false statements may be brought to our daughters’ attention, thereby causing them to suffer public humiliation, embarrassment and emotional distress.”
Here’s what you need to know about Lockwood and the accusations against him:
1. Presley Said She Was ‘Shocked & Horrified & Sick to My Stomach’ When She Found the Files on Lockwood’s Computer
Lisa Marie Presley made the stunning accusations against her estranged husband, Michael Lockwood, in court documents filed in their divorce, E!News reports. She claims in the documents that Lockwood has “hundreds of inappropriate photos of children and is facing allegations of sexual abuse and neglect.”
She said he has “not yet been convicted of crimes related to his possession of these photos,” but “that he possessed them is documented evidence of conduct that has destroyed the mental or emotional calm of (Presley).”
Presley wrote in court documents, “When I discovered the photos on (Lockwood’s) computer, and viewed the videos, I was shocked and horrified and sick to my stomach. I had no idea that (he) had taken those photos. I will refrain from describing the photographs in detail out of respect for the privacy of my family.”
She said Beverley Hills Police executed a search warrant on their home and “removed over 80 of (Lockwood’s) devices.” She said the devices haven’t been analyzed.
“My understanding is that Tennessee law enforcement is also conducting an investigation related to the photos and videos that I discovered. I have no idea what else may be on those devices and fear that there are more and worse images and evidence in these unanalyzed devices,” Presley wrote in court documents. The couple previously lived together in Tennessee.
“As with any matter potentially involving the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, our Agents first work, in the spirit of due diligence, to determine whether a crime occurred and whether it occurred in Tennessee,” the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a statement. “At this point, in this matter, we’ve yet to determine that to be the case. The work, however, to review potential evidence that might suggest otherwise continues. At this point, the TBI has not opened an official case in connection to this matter.”
Beverly Hills Police also issued a statement, saying, “In June 2016, the Beverly Hills Police Department was notified of alleged child abuse involving the Presley family. It was then determined the allegations stemmed from activity originating in the state of Tennessee.” The California police department confirmed it did conduct a search warrant at Presley’s home in support of the Tennessee investigation, seizing several items.
In a statement to Entertainment Tonight, Lockwood’s attorney, Jeff Struman, slammed Presley’s accusation as a “distasteful” attempt to damage his client’s reputation.
“It is very unfortunate and inappropriate that Ms. Presley chose to file a one-sided, inaccurate version of the facts in the Family Law Court’s publicly accessible files. Mr. Lockwood is not going to publicly disclose very negative information about Ms. Presley to retaliate,” Struman said in the statement. “Therefore, while Mr. Lockwood denies the truth of what Ms. Presley chose to put in the press, he has no further statement at this time.”
2. The Girls Are Being Cared for by Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie’s Mother
The girls are in the care of their grandmother, Priscilla Presley, according to a post on her Facebook page. She made the post after reports emerged that the 8-year-old girls, Harper and Finley, had been taken into the custody of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.
Priscilla Presley, 71, shared a photo of the girls on her Facebook page, thanking people for their support:
“There is Lots of confusion, commotion and concern from all the talk circulating,” Priscilla Presley wrote on Facebook on Sunday. “Let me put this to rest… the girls have not been in foster care and never will be. The girls have been with me and will be until all this is sorted out.”
3. Presley Is Also Accusing Lockwood of Spending More Than $1 Million on Her Credit Cars Without Her Permission
The bitter battle between Presley and Lockwood, which sparked the shocking child abuse allegations, is over whether Presley will have to pay spousal support to her husband as part of the divorce agreement. Lockwood is trying to get the court to order Presley to pay him $40,000 a month in support, along with $100,000 in attorneys’ fees, CBS News reports.
He said in court documents that he gave up his career as a musician to work with his wife.
According to CBS News, Presley has argued that she does not have the money to pay him support. She says she receives an inheritance check of $100,000 per month, along with health insurance, through Elvis Presley’s estate. She also has a 15 percent stake in Elvis Presley Enterprises held in a trust. The estate earns several millions of dollars a year, CBS reports. Despite that income, Presley says her funds were mishandled by a business manager and she owes millions in back taxes and credit card bills. She also claims to own a home in England that’s worth half of what she owes on it and says she hasn’t made any money through her own music career.
“I cannot recall the last time I spent money on clothes and shoes of any value,” she said in court.
She has claimed in court documents that nearly all of her $300 million fortune is gone. She says she has to pay for two nannies to monitor her twin daughters when they visit Lockwood.
She is also accusing Lockwood of spending more than $1 million on her credit cards without her permission. Lockwood has countered by saying Presley has more money than she says, and that his career was destroyed by working only with her.
He said she “has great difficulty being honest and she rarely, if ever, accepts personal responsibility for her own wrongdoing,” according to CBS.
A February 22 hearing is scheduled in the case.
4. Lockwood & Presley Were Sued by a Former Nanny in 2009 & Accused Her of Taking Photos of Their Daughters Without Permission
Lockwood and Presley were married on January 22, 2006, in Kyoyto, Japan, according to US Magazine. After being together for more than 10 years, the couple separated in June 2016, according to court documents.
The couple was sued by a former nanny, Christine White, in 2009 for failure to pay wages and also not allowing her to take rest and meal breaks, Radar Online reported.
“Ms. White was regularly required to work more than 12 hours without at least a three-hour break wherein she was relieved of all duties,” according to Radar. “Ms. White was regularly required to work 24 hours straight without the required 12-hour break or being paid one and one half times Plaintiff’s regular rate. Ms. White was regularly required to work more than five hours without a meal period of not less than 30 minutes and 10 hours without a second meal period without being compensated for an extra hour for each missed meal period.”
Presley and Lockwood denied the allegations and accused White of taking photos of their twin daughters without permission, violating a confidentiality agreement.
“White asked Presley and/or Lockwood if she could take pictures of their twin babies,” the couple said in court documents. “Presley and/or Lockwood stated that they did not want pictures taken of the twin babies by White.”
White’s lawsuit was dismissed in 2010, Radar reports.
Presley has previously been married three times, to Danny Keough from 1988 to 1994, to Michael Jackson from 1994 to 1996 and to Nicolas Cage from 2002 to 2004. She has two other children from her marriage to Keough, Riley, a 27-year-old actress, and Benjamin, 24.
5. Lockwood Has Played Guitar With Presley, Carly Simon, Bijou Phillips & Fiona Apple
Lockwood, a native of Hawthorne, California, is a guitarist who has been performing professionally since 1979, when he graduated from Bakersfield High School, according to his website. Lockwood is also a writer and producer.
Along with playing guitar with Presley, he has performed with Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, Carly Simon, Bijou Phillips, Ben Taylor and several others.
He joined the band Lions & Ghosts in 1985 and performed with them until 1989 after releasing two albums. He also formed a band, Wink, with Michael Marquesen, Tony Babylon and Brian Keats.
