Trevante Rhodes as Adult Chiron
While La La Land was the frontrunner for the Best Picture Oscar at the 2017 Oscars, Barry Jenkins' Moonlight pulled off a shocking victory and won the top prize. The film, which cost just $1.5 million to produce, tells the delicate story of Chiron, a young gay black man in three distinct periods of his life as he tries to find out who he really is. In the first part, he is a child in Miami who befriends a drug dealer named Juan who becomes a father figure. In the second part, he is a teenager and the target of bullies. In the last part, he is an adult, still aimlessly searching for his place in the world. Trevante Rhodes, who appeared in Tyler Perry's series If Loving You Is Wrong, stars as Chiron in the final part.
Moonlight is based on Tarell Alvin McCraney's play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue. The film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Bet Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali), Best Supporting Actress (Naomie Harris) and Best Film Editing. Editor Joi McMillon is the first African American woman nominated for editing.
