Oscars 2017: Meet the Best Supporting Actor Nominees

Mahershala Ali as Juan in Moonlight

Mahershala Ali might only be in the first part of Moonlight, but his performance as Juan is unforgettable. It makes him the frontrunner for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar at the 2017 Oscars. Ali, who also starred in Hidden Figures, has already won the Best Supporting Actor Award from the Screen Actors Guild. However, his losses at the BAFTAs and Golden Globes means that he' still vulnerable. Lion's Dev Patel won the award at the BAFTAs and was also nominated for an Oscar. Nocturnal Animals' Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who wasn't nominated for an Oscar, won the Golden Globe.

This is Ali's first ever Oscar nomination, despite being in the business since 2001, when he starred on TV's Crossing Jordan. He appeared in the 2008 Best Picture nominee The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. He earned an Emmy nomination for playing Remy Danton on House of Cards and returned to Netflix to play the villain Cottonmouth on Marvel's Luke Cage.
