Viola Davis as Rose Maxson in Fences
Viola Davis, one of the best actresses working today, is finally on the cusp of winning her first Oscar and it will come in the Best Supporting Actress category at the 2017 Oscars. Davis was nominated for just the third time in her stellar career for her performance as Rose Maxson in Fences, Denzel Washingotn's filmed adaptation of August Wilson's play. Davis' nomination in the supporting category was seen as a surprise, since she plays the husband of Washington's Troy. Plus, she won the 2010 Tony Award for Best Actress for her performance in the same role on the stage.
It would be a real Oscar upset if Davis loses the Oscar because she's already won the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award and BAFTA Award for Fences. But that doesn't mean it will be a cakewalk for her because four other talented women are in the Best Supporting Actress Category. They are Naomi Harris, Nicole Kidman, Michelle Williams and Octavia Spencer. Click through to meet the other nominees. Every nominee stars in a Best Picture Nominee, as well. (Getty)
