The Weeknd is one of the biggest pop stars on the planet. From humble beginnings in Ontario, Canada, to becoming the first artist ever to simultaneously hold the top three spots on the Billboard R&B charts, his rise has been one of meteoric proportions. He recently scored his third number one hit with the single “Starboy.”
The Weeknd has been the recipient of eight Billboard Music Awards, an Academy Award nomination, and tonight, he will be performing alongside Daft Punk at the Grammy Awards. Given this massive success, it’s safe to assume that the R&B singer is rolling in cash. But just how much does he really make? According to Forbes, The Weeknd (born Abel Tesfaye) has an estimated net worth of $30 million.
Read on to learn about The Weeknd’s net worth and how he spends his money.
5. His Album ‘Starboy’ Debuted Atop the Billboard 200
The Weeknd’s latest album, Starboy, has definitely contributed to his growing net worth. The project was released by XO and Republic Records last November, and it shot straight to number one when it debuted on the Billboard 200. Driven by the impressive fact that all 18 album cuts cracked the Billboard Hot 100, Starboy also received favorable reviews from critics, who commended its production and pop sensibility. Nolan Feeney for Entertainment Weekly praised The Weeknd for avoiding music “clichés with observations and anecdotes that feel specific and genuine.”
Features on the album include Kendrick Lamar, Future, Lana Del Rey, and the aforementioned Daft Punk. Starboy sold 348,000 copies its first week, while netting the second-biggest week ever for online streams. The Weeknd continued this success into the end of the year, as he was the most streamed artist during the holiday season with 807.7 million streams. As of January, Starboy has sold 904,000 copies in the United States.
4. He Partnered With Puma In 2016
Last year, The Weeknd partnered with PUMA to be the face of their “Run The Streets” Sportstyle campaign. The collection was promoted as an alternative to active wear, offering products that were both stylish and functional in design. According to PUMA, the singer’s “hustle in the music industry reflects the ‘on the go’ lifestyle of the campaign. His laid-back, streetwise style and swagger is the epitome of Run the Streets.”
This is not the first time The Weeknd has endorsed a brand. In the past, he’s collaborated with Apple Music, PAX Vaporizers on a custom XO line that cost $324.99, and fashion designer Alexander Wang on a collection of fleece hoodies and sneakers dubbed WANGXO. The Weeknd will also star in H&M’s upcoming Spring campaign, which will be available in March.
In 2016, The Weeknd donated $250, 000 to the Black Lives Matter Movement.
3. He Is The Owner Of The XO Record Label
In 2011, The Weeknd burst onto the scene with a trio of acclaimed mixtapes: House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence (eventually packaged as Trilogy and sold for retail). They were released through XO, a moniker that served as The Weeknd’s unofficial “label” until he partnered with Republic Records in 2012. The joint deal legitimized the XO brand, making Weeknd the official founder and providing distribution/promotion for all subsequent releases.
To date, The Weeknd has put out three albums under the XO/Republic banner: Kiss Land (2013), Beauty Behind the Madness (2015), and Starboy, with the former two reportedly adding $3 million to his overall net worth. Belly also released an XO project in 2016, the free mixtape Inzombia. The Palestinian-Canadian rapper fills out the rest of the label roster alongside artists NAV and Derek Wise.
2. He Has A $2 Million Car Collection
In “Starboy,” The Weeknd sings about his McLaren P1, Bentley Mulsanne and Lamborghini Aventador SV Roadster. And while it’s customary for rappers and singers to brag about owning fasts cars (“none of these toys on lease too, ah”), The Weeknd takes his automobile collection very seriously. He actually owns all of the cars that appear in the song’s music video, which includes shots of him driving the P1 down Los Angeles’ Mulholland Drive.
If that weren’t enough, The Weeknd also owns a Mercedes-AMG G63. These four impressive purchases tally up to roughly 3,000 horsepower and a cost of $2 million. Fortunately, given the singer’s success, it looks as though he’ll be able to continue this dazzling collection well into the future.
1. He Has Won Two Grammy Awards
The Weeknd has been nominated for 180 awards over the course of his career, eight of which come from the Grammy Awards. In 2016, his album Beauty Behind the Madness earned seven nominations including Album of the Year, while singles “Can’t Feel My Face” and “Earned It” racked up nods in the categories of Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best R&B Song, and Record of the Year.
The Weeknd ended up taking two awards home that night, Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best R&B Performance for “Earned It.” According to Earn The Necklace in 2016, these wins more than tripled The Weeknd’s then net worth of $8 million due to an increase in tour sales and merchandise. Unfortunately, the singer will not be repeating this success at the Grammys this year, as Starboy missed the cutoff for considered release dates (between Oct. 1, 2015 and Sept. 30, 2016). The album will be eligible for the 2018 Grammy Awards.
