Tonight, on the series finale of The Vampire Diaries, Stefan sacrificed himself to save his his brother.
Fans knew to expect the death of a main character. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actor Paul Wesley (who plays Stefan) revealed that a major character would die, adding on, “You have to pay it off. Someone needed to die. If someone had not died, I would have been disappointed.”
Heading into the latter half of the show, Julie Plec warned viewers at home that they should prepare their tissues with the tweet below:
Tonight, longtime fans of the show were excited to see some of their favorite and most-missed characters return to the screen, including actress Nina Dobrev, who plays Elena. Enzo, Jeremy, and John, showed up as well.
In her interview with Variety, showrunner and executive producer Julie Plec said, “I’m thrilled to bring this show to an end the way we always intended — with Nina back to help us say goodbye.” Executive producer Kevin Williamson added on, “I’m so excited to have Nina back to ensure our farewell episode is truly epic!”
Speaking to Deadline, Plec, who directed the show’s finale and co-wrote it with Kevin Williamson, said, “There are some familiar faces. There are little lines and moments, and music moments that call back on stuff from earlier seasons. It is a true goodbye to the series, and all the eight years worth of story, but also a bookend. A beautiful bookend I hope to these characters that we introduced in a certain way, 171 episodes ago.”
