Game of Thrones Season 7 is coming back this year, but its return might be later than you were expecting. HBO just announced that Game of Thrones is coming back on July 16, 2017. But this may be later than you were expecting. Here’s why.
In seasons past, Game of Thrones typically came back in April. But this time, it’s not returning until July — and it’s a shorter season at that. This is because “winter has arrived” in the show, so it had to arrive where they were filming too. In other words, they had to wait to film until the weather was grayer and grimmer in all their filming locations, Variety reported.
The producers said: “This year it’ll probably be a bit later, ’cause we’re starting a bit later because at the end of this season, ‘winter is here,’ and that means that sunny weather doesn’t really serve our purposes anymore. So we kind of pushed everything down the line, so we could get some grim, grey weather even in the sunnier places that we shoot.”
Season 6 premiered on April 24, so Season 7 is starting a good three months later. And it’s going to be a shorter season, too, with only seven episodes total. But the episodes will likely be pretty amazing, since producers have said that filming has taken just as long, despite filming fewer episodes total.
Here’s a video Game of Thrones shared on Facebook about the premiere date:
By the way, in case you’re wanting to delve a little deeper into that Twitter announcement… The lines from Jon Snow referencing the Great War are new. It looks like we’re going to be seeing some pretty amazing things in Season 7.
