Katy Perry has kept fans eager with the promise of a new album this year, and it looks as though the singer decided to have some fun with them for April Fool’s Day.
Perry posted a picture on Instagram with the caption “I’m proud to announce the cover for my 4th album!” before adding “Happy April Fools! Been plotting in the same type of sports bra from my IM and laminated calendar since 99.” While the prank may ruffle the feathers of fans desperate for new music, there’s little denying that the attached photo– of Perry sitting on a chair with messy hair and a sports bra– would not have made for the most sleek album cover.
Perry, who returned from a brief hiatus with the hit single “Chained to the Rhythm” in February, has been extremely secretive about her upcoming project. With no mention of guest features, artwork, or even a tentative release date, the only information fans have to go on are clues and hints, like Perry’s Instagram post below, which suggests her music might take a more political approach. “Hillary lit a fire inside of me that burns brighter and brighter every day, and that fire will NEVER be put out,” wrote Perry, “It’s funny, sometimes people who disagree with me just say, ‘Shut up and sing.’ Boy, will I do so in a whole new way… next year. Hell hath no fury like a woman REBORN.”
In March, Perry revealed more about the album to Capital FM Radio, saying “I’ve got something swirling, but, you know, I think I want to put out some songs first before I give them the full meal. I think we are digesting things in bite-size these days and that’s what we can handle. It’s not shade at all anything like that — you’ll know when it’s shade.” There have also been rumors that Perry shot a music video in December, and that potential song titles might include “Heartache Crusade” and “Crocodile Tears,” but none of these have been confirmed.
In the meantime, check out the music video, for “Chained to the Rhythm” below.
