Kodak Black‘s legal woes came to a head on Wednesday afternoon.
The Florida rapper, who had previously served time for kidnapping and drug possession, was taken into custody earlier this year for allegedly violating his house arrest parole. During the time Black was legally confined to his home, he attended a boxing match, disrupted an anger management class, and, according to Local 10 News, attacking a bartender at a Miami strip club.
The latter charge was the focus of much speculation for Black’s defense, as security footage and testimony from those in attendance gave differing accounts of what happened. Baljit Singh, the manager of the club, claimed that when the bartender in question, Jennifer Cunningham, “gave him a hug, she grabbed his genitals and said I want to talk to you and he proceeded to tell her you are not my type and she got mad and walked out.” With additional testimony from a club security guard and surveillance footage, Black (born Dieuson Octave) was cleared of the battery and assault claim.
But while the rapper was ultimately cleared of this particular charge, Judge Thomas Lynch did hand him five guilty verdicts in a Fort Lauderdale courtroom. The sentencing will be held on May 4th, and, according to TMZ, prosecutors for the case will be pushing for the maximum of 8 years in prison.
This comes as a heavy blow to Black’s fledgling rap career, as his major label debut Painting Pictures peaked at number three on the Billboard 200, with 71,000 equivalent album sales during its first week. Pictures also snagged guest features from Future, Bun B, and Young Thug, while lead single “Tunnel Vision” surpassed expectations and charted at number 27 on the US Billboard Hot 100. In what proves to be a case of irony, Black’s verdict arrives mere hours after Kevin Gates, a fellow hip-hop artist, was sentenced to 30 months in jail over felony gun charges. While the two have yet to work together, Gates did give a lyrical shout-out to Black on the 2015 song “Khaza,” and both appear on the new Fate of the Furious soundtrack. Read more about them below.
