On June 6, 2015, two convicted murderers – Richard Matt and David Sweat – escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York. It took authorities three weeks to find them, with Matt being killed on June 26 and Sweat captured on June 28. Following an investigation, it was determined that Mitchell, a prison seamstress, helped them escape. She pleaded guilty to charges related to their escape and was sentenced to up to seven years in prison and has to pay $6,375 in fines and court fees.

Mitchell’s story was turned into a film by writer/director Stephen Tolkin, who was a writer on ABC’s Brothers & Sisters and the short-lived shows Taxi Brooklyn, Summerland. He’s also directed episodes of American Playhouse, Golden Years and Switched at Birth. He directed the 2014 Lifetime movie A Day Late and a Dollar Short with Whoopi Goldberg.

As for star Penelope Ann Miller, she has a Golden Globe nomination for 1994’s Carlito’s Way. Her other credits include Awakenings, Kindergarten Cop, The Artist, American Crime, Mistresses and Chaplin.
