‘The Leftovers’ Season 3 Episode 2 Ending Explained [PHOTOS]

First, we clearly see that we're in Australia. A kangaroo runs out in front of a police vehicle and is hit. The officer gets out and shoots the kangaroo to put it out of its misery. Australia has been a big central part of The Leftovers for a long time now. Kevin's dad went to Australia. A man named David Burton was there and supposedly couldn't die. There was a lot of symbolism and levels upon levels in these scenes. (HBO)

In the next scene, we learn clearly that this scene is taking place in the present and NOT the future. The announcer refers to the seventh anniversary of October 15. He says "we may see some hell fire moving up from the south," joking about the end of the world. (HBO)
