‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff: Will Dunk and Egg Be Turned Into a New TV Series?

(HBO)

Fans are excited about the news that HBO is looking into not one but four possible spinoffs to Game of Thrones. With the popular series only having two short seasons left, this is the perfect time to start introducing ideas for keeping the universe going. One of the ideas that fans are most excited about is having a Dunk and Egg spinoff. Could it happen?

HBO is teaming with four writers who are developing projects that explore different time periods in Westeros. Two of these writers are even working with George R. R. Martin himself on developing their scripts. (Which might be sad news to fans who just want him to finish The Winds of Winter.) HBO hasn’t committed to any of these series yet, but it’s definitely interested in following up on Game of Thrones’ success. The writers are Max Borenstein, Jane Goldman (with GRRM), Brian Helgeland, and Carly Wray (with GRRM). Dan Weiss and David Benioff will be executive producers, but they won’t be writing any of the spinoffs themselves.

Right now, we don’t know what time periods the four spinoffs will focus on or any additional details. But that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating. And some past comments made by Martin have left fans thinking that Dunk and Egg could definitely be one of the two spinoffs he’s personally involved in.

About a year ago, GRRM talked with Entertainment Weekly and said that he thinks the most natural follow-up would be an adaptation of his Dunk & Egg novellas. (Spoilers here for the Dunk & Egg novellas.)

The novellas take place about 90 years before the characters from Game of Thrones. Dunk is a hedge knight named Ser Duncan the Tall. (Being a hedge knight means he is a knight who’s nomadic and doesn’t own land.) Egg is his squire, who will later be King Aegon V Targaryen of Westeros. There are a lot of interesting aspects to these novellas, including how Dunk becomes a member of the Kingsguard, Egg’s development, and even a dragon egg.

Another interesting point is that Brienne is a descendant of Dunk.

Martin believes these could be made into a series or, more easily, two-hour standalone TV movies.

Most fans are pretty excited about the idea of a Dunk and Egg spinoff. Some fans, however, are worried that there wouldn’t be enough action in the series to please current Game of Thrones viewers, or that fans just wouldn’t tune in unless they were watching a sequel or prequel featuring characters they already know.
