‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Renewed or Cancelled: Will the Show Return for Season 14?

As ABC’s highest-rated drama, it’s no surprise that this isn’t the end of Meredith Grey and the residents of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

In February, the network announced they’d be renewing Grey’s Anatomy for another season. Ellen Pompeo (who plays Meredith Grey) also dished that the show won’t be ending for good until she’s ready, so fans won’t have to say their goodbyes for years, potentially. In March, the actress told Variety, “Shonda [Rhimes] and I have both said that when I’m ready to stop, we’re going to stop the show. The story is about Meredith Grey’s journey and when I’m done, the show will end.” So how long will Pompeo keep going? , “… I’m mulling that over as we speak,” she says.

When can we expect season 14 to return? Typically, Grey’s premieres in September and wraps in May, so it’s very likely that we can expect the next season to be coming back in September of this year. On Tuesday, ABC released their 2017-2018 fall schedule, and revealed that Grey’s will maintain its 8pm Thursday slot time, followed by Scandal at 9 and How To Get Away With Murder at 10pm.

Although season 13 of Grey’s was down by 7% in ratings and 2% in total viewers compared to season 12, it still drew in more fans than any other show with an average of 7.8 million. (Trailing it is Modern Family with 6.91 million viewers).

Earlier this week, it was revealed that ABC has picked up a Grey’s Anatomy spinoff series that will center on a team of firefighters as opposed to a group of doctors. The show has been picked up straight-to-series and the first episode will air as a “planted episode on the veteran medical drama,” reports The Hollywood Reporter. In a statement regarding the series, ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey said, “No one can interweave the jeopardy firefighters face in the line of duty with the drama in their personal lives quite like Shonda, and Grey’s signature Seattle setting is the perfect backdrop for this exciting spinoff.” Stacy McKee, who has written many Grey’s Anatomy episodes, is slated to write the script. A launch date for the show has not yet been announced.

If you need a refresher or are late to the game, the first 12 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy are now available on Netflix. According to Netflix Life, season 13 of the show will be available on June 17, so mark your calendars.
