Miley Cyrus Cries During ‘Malibu’ Performance at 2017 Billboard Music Awards

Noah and Billy Ray Cyrus got the opportunity to announce Miley’s debut of her single “Malibu” at tonight’s 2017 Billboard Music Awards. Sister Noah joked that this is the first time her sister is performing with pants on. Wearing a chic, country look in all white, Cyrus delivered a soft, yet performance. So, what made Cyrus decided to tone down her look? In an interview with Billboard she explained:

I love talking to people, and I approach them in a normal, ‘Don’t treat me different, ’cause I’m not’ way. That’s what started this evolution for me, getting out of my Dead Petz phase. People stare at me anyway, but people stare at me a lot when I’m dressed as a fucking cat … I like talking to people that don’t agree with me, but I don’t think I can do that in an aggressive way. I don’t think those people are going to listen to me when I’m sitting there in nipple pasties, you know? … All the nipple pastie shit, that’s what I did because I felt it was part of my political movement, and that got me to where I am now. I’m evolving, and I surround myself with smart people that are evolved.

Cyrus then added:

I fucking hate it when people can’t adjust. I used to [resist changing]. But I haven’t smoked weed in three weeks, which is the longest I’ve ever [gone without it]. I’m not doing drugs, I’m not drinking, I’m completely clean right now! That was just something that I wanted to do.

In the background, footage of the ocean, beaches and balloons flashed across the big screen.

Towards the end of her performance, Cyrus started to cry and her voice broke up a bit. But, Cyrus wasn’t the only performer to shed tears during her performance tonight as Julia Michaels did the same. Michaels performed her song “Issues” and started to cry at the end, unable to completely carry out the last line of the song. It brought character and emotion to her performance, as did Cyrus’ tearful delivery.

Whenever Cyrus performs, her high-profile hubby-to-be Liam Hemsworth is usually not on site. However, this time, he was spotted with the singer backstage, according to Entertainment Tonight. In an interview with Billboard, Cyrus talked about how she wrote her song “Malibu” for Hemsworth, explaining that:

I never would’ve believed you if three years ago you told me I’d be here writing this song. They’re going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam. So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, ‘This is how I feel’?

Currently, Cyrus is gearing up for a performance this week on the finale of The Voice. She is also getting ready for a return to season 13 of The Voice as a coach again. Jennifer Hudson is also joining the cast.
