The film is based on the late Michael Hastings‘ nonfiction book The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan, which centers on the journalist’s travels with General Stanley McChrystal.
War Machine is also based on the events that led to McChrystal’s firing after Hastings’ “The Runaway General” Rolling Stone profile was published. The profile revealed that McChrystal had unflattering opinions of the Obama Administration and he lost his post as the commander of all forces in Afghanistan. He was later replaced by David Patraeus.
Michod also wrote the screenplay for War Machine. The film was produced by Ian Bryce, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Pitt under his Plan B Entertainment banner. It has a 60 percent fresh rating from critics at Rotten Tomatoes. It runs 122 minutes long.
Now, let’s meet the main cast.
