Spencer Matthews is the younger brother of hedge fund manager, James Matthews. On May 20, he became brother-in-law to Pippa Middleton. He served as best man in the highly-anticipated wedding.
Matthews is a celebrity in his own right, making a name for himself by way of reality television, best known for his role on Made In Chelsea. He has also penned an autobiography titled Confessions Of A Chelsea Boy.
Here is what you need to know:
1. He’s Famous
The 27-year-old socialite is best known for his role on the reality television program, Made In Chelsea, which he was a part of from 2011-2015.
2. He Studied Cinema at the University of Southern California (USC) for 9 Months
Matthews attended the prestigious Eton College — the alma mater of Prince William and Prince Harry. After he graduated from the all-boys boarding school, he decided to move to the United States to study cinema in 2006. According to the Telegraph, he only stayed at the school for nine months before deciding it just wasn’t for him. He moved back to the UK and started working in public relations.
He became a PR manager and worked with several hot spots in the UK. Before taking on a full-time career in the entertainment industry, Matthews tried his hand at finance, not unlike his older brother, James.
In 2011, however, Matthews caught a break and was offered a spot on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, a “music-based comedy quiz show.” Over the next few years, he received more opportunities that led him steadily down the path to fame.
3. He Is the More Controversial Matthews Brother
The youngest of the Matthews family (he has an older sister, Nina, an older brother, James, and he had an older brother named Michael who passed away — read below for more) has been referred to as a “bad boy” from time to time.
Aside from his aforementioned steroid use that got him thrown off I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, a video of Matthews surfaced, one in which he was allegedly snorting cocaine, according to the Telegraph.
In his autobiography, Matthews wrote about having sex with 1,000 women and losing his virginity at age 13.
4. He Is Currently Dating Reality TV Star Vogue Williams
Despite being a bit of a ladies man, Matthews has settled down and is currently dating Irish model and fellow reality TV star, Vogue Williams. The two recently starred together on The Jump. Williams was previously married to Brian McFadden, a singer, formerly in the Irish boy band, Westlife.
Williams will not be attending the wedding of James Matthews and Pippa Middleton as she has a “prior engagement” taking place that day.
“Vogue has a prior engagement in her diary on the date of the wedding, but wishes Pippa and James all the best on their special day,” a rep said in April on Williams’ behalf.
This conflicts with reports of Pippa’s “no ring, no bring” policy in which only engaged or married persons would be permitted to bring a guest to the wedding. It has been reported that Williams wasn’t invited to the wedding because she’s not engaged (or married to) Matthews.
5. He Lost His Older Brother, Michael, in a Skiing Accident
Michael Matthews died in 1999. He had been on Mount Everest when he got lost in heavy snow and high winds. According to the Telegraph, Matthews “had become the youngest Briton to ever manage to summit the peak” before he passed away; his body was never found.
The Matthews family has set up the Michael Matthews Foundation, which Spencer is a big part of (his brother, James, is listed as a Trustee).
“The Michael Matthews Foundation (MMF) helps to provide education for children in remote places who, without a helping hand, might not receive an education at all,” the MMF website reads in part. “To date, MMF’s income has resulted largely from the fund-raising [endeavors] of Michael’s brothers, James and Spencer, their friends, and other family members.”
